My Favorite Kindle Books of 2012

2012 was a wonderful years for books, especially those in the young adult genre (which I love). Don't ask me to place the following books in order, because I loved them all so much. Also, not all of these are young adult books. Some are not appropriate for those under the age of 18. Happy New Year!

One Snowy Night Before Christmas by Pamela Fryer
$2.99 or FREE for Prime Members

Jessica Jeffries hates Christmas. With all the commercialism, stress and chaos, there are a lot of people who feel the same way. But Jessie has more reason than most for hating it. She’s been robbed, dumped, caught pneumonia, broken her leg, and this year she ran over Santa Claus with her truck.

Tom Dunham’s holiday is turning out to be pretty awful. Not only is he suddenly responsible for a six-year-old daughter he hasn’t seen since infancy, but Amy holds him personally responsible for uprooting her, making it impossible for Santa to find her on Christmas morning.

Things go from bad to worse when Tom’s car breaks down on a freezing mountain road, but he gets a reprieve when a young woman who looks more like a Victoria’s Secret model than a tow truck driver comes to his rescue. Suddenly things are looking up—until she runs over an old man with an eerie resemblance to St. Nick.

Warning: One Snowy Night Before Christmas might just make you believe in Santa Claus again. If you’re a fan of Donna Kauffman, Jane Graves and Jill Shalvis, this Christmas story is sure to make you yearn for eggnog and gingerbread cookies.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

We all know the importance of an emergency fund, but sometimes we need a brutal reminder of how not having an emergency account can hurt us. As someone who is in debt up to her eyeballs, I know I need to start saving money so I can stop relying on credit. The only problem is finding a way to have extra money to put back when I have so many financial obligations. Still, I decided to give Emergency Fund 101: How to Save Money for Unexpected Expenses a try and I'm glad I did.

Not only does this book address my issue of being in excessive debt, but it's an encouraging look at how it really is possible to build a savings account that will cover the unexpected. It even tells you why so many financial experts suggest having at least $1,000 for the unexpected. I have to admit that I was really impressed with this book and would recommend it to anyone that needs to build an emergency fund. Whether you're in your 20s or have even retired, you need to build an account to cover those unexpected expenses. Take it from someone who just scrambled to find the money to replace a destroyed tire, you need to be prepared. Check out this book and start building your account $1 at a time.

The Sultan of Monte Cristo by Holy Ghost Writer Review

Title: The Sultan of Monte Cristo: First Sequel to the Count of Monte Cristo
Author: Holy Ghost Writer
Pages: 78
Price: $0.99
Rated: 4 out of 5 Stars

I've never read The Count of Monte Cristo, but after curling up with the sequel written by Holy Ghost Writer, I'm thinking I should. This is one of those books that is truly hard to put down. You just want to keep reading long into the night. With only 78 pages, you'll have this sequel finished in no time.

I enjoy the vivid story telling that Holy Ghost Writer was able to accomplish. It wasn't the type of book that I would normally read, but I loved it. In an attempt to get back at everyone who has ever shut her out, seventeen year-old Princess Echo becomes another victim, dragging Ayden, her forbidden love, along in a race to freedom, to find out who she really is, and to put a world that has been swallowed by lies back together again.

In the first installment of The Bleeding Heart Trilogy, life becomes a dangerous game of kill or be killed, love or let go. When death threatens the forbidden love of an unlikely couple and they are forced to do the unthinkable, to what extent will they go to be together?

Excerpt:

I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, I was going to die tonight. There was no escaping it or any way around it. I couldn’t run from my destiny this time; I couldn’t hide. No, tonight I faced my fate in the chambers of death. The screams of the crowd in the arena filled my ears, the shouts of excitement and laughter boiling my heart down to nothing but untainted sorrow. I refused to open my eyes, but I could sense where I was by that rusty smell of metal and dried blood Father brought home with him every day. The shackles that bound my ankles and wrists to the wall confirmed it. I was a prisoner in my own home, my own Haven. I couldn’t fathom how in forty-eight hours my life had taken a complete three-sixty spin, but here I was, locked in the dungeon of my father’s kingdom, hidden from the world until it was my time to surface.

Glistening Haven by Jill A Cooper Review

Title: Glistening Haven
Author: Jill A Cooper
Genre: Romance, Suspense

You know you're in for a real treat when the first page of a book features the statement, "Wow! These chocolate covered human organs are gosh darn tasty!" Glistening Haven is an interesting adventure that takes a closer look into the lives of a creepy bunch of housewives. You know the type - those that seem to have it all together. They're the perfect wives, mothers, cooks, and even make the best damn cookies of all the soccer moms. But, there's something lurking under the surface of housewife Susan Monroe, something monstrous.

A great read for those that want something different from the average monster novel. It's a quick read that will keep you thinking about the possibilities of that strangely, creepy next door neighbor and how she's so perfect, she almost glistens.........

Reviewer was provided with a copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.

The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over by David Carter Review

Title: The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over
Author: David Carter
Genre: Mystery

It seems as though authors have forgotten about the importance of well-written stories. Stories that have enough detail to draw you in and make you feel like you're right there, watching each scene unfold. David Carter brings his A game when it comes to The Murder Diaries. The book is so well-detailed, that the scenes seem to leap from the page and take place around you. With that said, the detail isn't overwhelming. Carter uses just enough detail to make the book come to life, but not so much that the book drags.

I would recommend The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over to anyone who loves a good mystery. If you're a fan of Criminal Minds or CSI Miami, you're going to really enjoy this attention-grabbing novel.

Guest Post by Linda Wisdom: Gift Books That Inspired Me

Merry Christmas!

As a kid there’s nothing more fun than tearing into wrapped packages to see what you got. I think some memories are stronger than others.

I remember the Christmas Eve night I woke up and was convinced I heard sleigh bells overhead. Who knows, maybe I did.

I was always the dreamer who enjoyed making up stories. My library and comic book collection backed that up. One of my grade school teachers told my parents that she hoped I’d read more for pleasure. At school I tended to pick out the biographies because I always loved history and I still use that love with adding historical facts to my books. But at home you’d find a large selection of fairy tale books. One book I still have is Fairy Tales Around the World. It was a Christmas gift from my dad one year and I would read those stories over and over. My comic books were Casper and Wendy. Hm, do you think I should have realized back then where I’d eventually end up with my writing?

But it was many fairy tale books in my personal library that I enjoyed the most. My godmother was a good friend of my mom’s and every month she visited I either received a book, a Madame Alexander doll or a stuffed animal.

Could I name a specific book? Not really. Along with the many fairy tale books I read the Bobbsey Twins about siblings that stuck together, Trixie Beldon, Nancy Drew. They all inspired my imagination.

Books allow us to visit foreign lands we might not have a chance to explore, meet characters we might not run across in our everyday lives, and even find ourselves exploring galaxies far far away. We can laugh, cry and fall in love. Visualize ourselves in a whole new way.

Five years ago I met a psychiatrist at a party and I joked I hear voices. I still remember her laughing and telling me “You’re a writer. It’s allowed.”

It’s nice to know that characters can live inside my head, tell me what’s going on with their lives and whisper what they want me to tell other people.

Books are a wonderful escape for any of us and for a child. They can sit there and begin that journey we adults started years ago.

I love Christmas for special reading and was lucky enough to be asked to write three holiday theme books, Twas the Night, Mistletoe Magic and Bells, Rings and Angels Wings. It was fun to think of all the holiday magic I could write about. And I like to think others will see the holiday the way I do.

I hope you will also think about giving books to a child this Christmas. Maybe pair it with a toy so they have something to hang onto as they read.

And while you’re at it, gift yourself with a book or two. Consider it a prize once you’ve dealt with the holidays.

And I hope you all have a beautiful holiday filled with magic and joy.

Author Spotlight and Giveaway with Linda Wisdom

About Linda Wisdom

When I sold to Silhouette books on my wedding anniversary in 1979 I didn't expect to get this far. I love what I do and can't imagine doing anything else. I'm married with two white mini Schnauzers, one parrot, and a demented tortoise. We live in Southern California near San Diego in a town that's provided fodder for some of my stories. I like to say that when we moved here twenty years ago there were three romance writers. Now there is only me and to date I have not been considered a suspect.

You'll also notice I'm putting my backlist books up for the Kindle along with many more found at www.joyridebooks.com that's also for the Kindle. A lot of my fans have asked if my past books will ever be available as e-books and I'm so glad I was able to do that for them. So keep checking my book list here and you'll see more showing up!

My Hex series are the books of my heart. The ones I've wanted to write for a long time and so glad to see out there. Many readers are confused by the two Demon titles and different cover looks. They're a part of the Hex series, still the disgraced witches from the Witches Academy, just with a different look. And yes, more are coming along with some novellas featuring the first witches.

There's times I think I enjoy writing the creatures more than the characters. And probably why my Fluff and Puff bunny slippers tend to never be where I left them!

Flirting With Fangs by Peg Pierson Review and Giveaway

Title: Flirting With Fangs
Author: Peg Pierson
Price: $4.99
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Fantasy
Publication Date: September 27, 2012
Pages: 304
Rating: 5 out 5 Stars

Authors know their characters better than anyone else, but Baily Hamilton never expected to know her character so.....intimately. After a horrible divorce and a serious case of writer's block, Baily thinks that Torin Kaine is nothing more than a well-selected stripper, sent to by her best friend and publisher to cheer her up. Her head starts reeling when she finds out that isn't so. But, she plans to make the most of it and enjoy the man that she created.

All I can say is WOW! It may be because I'm an author myself, but I feel that this was the most unique storyline I have ever read. Flirting With Fangs by Peg Pierson explores a world in which characters are like actors waiting to be called in for their next scene. But, when Baily Hamilton is too depressed to create a new story for her characters of Night Temptations, things get a little out of hand. Not only does her tears of loneliness and heartache bring to life the man she created on page, but her writer's block pisses off the villainess of her series as well. Will our young writer finish the series? More importantly, what we happen to the man she knows so well and loves with all her heart?

About the Kindle FreeTime App

Parents have a new option to let their children play safely on the Kindle Fire, with parental controls to determine what they can do and access. The new Kindle FreeTime Unlimited app has a one month trial available with the purchase of new Kindle Fire. After that, subscription service starts at just $2.99 a month for Prime members.

So what's so cool about the FreeTime app? Just about everything. Designed for children ages 3 to 8, the program brings together parent-approved kid-friendly materials on a specialized carousel just for your child. Have several kids that will be using the same tablet? No problem. Amazon designed the FreeTime to include up to six different individualized profiles. The cost for multiple kids is still under $7 a month for Prime members. For non-members, the multi-child option is $10 a month.

For that price, parents get an individualized program with age-appropriate materials for their child. Each profile can be customized with free materials or pre-purchased materials selected by the parents. When FreeTime is active, parents can use the parental controls to designate how much time children can spend on any specific activity.

For example, children might be given unlimited ability to read books, but limited to just half an hour of videos and game play. Each type of activity, from reading books to using apps, has a separate parental control, so parents can allow children plenty of reading time and not find out later that he's been playing Angry Birds instead.

The customized carousel for each child features videos, television programs, educational games, books and more that are just right for that child. If parents want children to have access to other materials, parents can use their password to add other things to the child's profile.

One of the best features of the FreeTime program is that the Kindle Fire's web browser and purchasing abilities are disabled when FreeTime is active. Better yet, children cannot leave the program and go explore other areas on the Kindle without having the proper exit password.

The program is designed for times when parents need to be able to allow their child access to the Kindle Fire, for entertainment or reading purposes, but want to be able to control the child's activities without constantly monitoring him or her. The FreeTime app is already downloaded on new Kindle Fires and comes with a free month-long trial. After that, parents can choose to buy the program on a month-to-month basis.

Wendy Gets a Life by Allan Lloyd - FREEBIE

Wendy Gets a Life by Allan Lloyd
FREE - 12/11/2012

Um, gee, I'm not sure what to put here as a book description, because the whole damn thing wound up as a shambles.
So I've asked my shrink, Dr Ruth, to write the following from her secret notes about me:

Allan Lloyd is a patient of mine who believes that what started out as 'the kind of financial thriller John Grisham would've recognized as a knock-off of one of his books' somehow got out of his control when one of his main characters, Wendy, refused to say or do what he wanted her to, and walked out of his original story to 'get a life'. He also appears to believe that he was then forced to follow her, using every writing trick in the book to try to get her back on track. Did it work? Professional doctor/patient confidentiality precludes my commenting on that.

What I will say, however, is that 'Wendy Gets A Life' is highly original, hilariously funny (whether intentionally or not), and the perfect novella length for Kindle reading.

I hope you'll buy it. You'll enjoy it immensely, and I might have some chance of at least part of Allan's outstanding account being paid before I dump him as a patient.
