The heavy snow had made the rocks slippery, and Robyn struggled to get back up. She tried to grab a rock, but the surface under the snow was smooth. Throwing out one arm, she was able to turn herself around, so she was no longer sliding headfirst, but she couldn’t stop.
“Jason,” she yelled,
feeling her body gain momentum. “Help. Help!”
He didn’t even turn to look
as she fell, faster and faster. The last she saw was the back of his head as
she hurtled over the edge.
The cliff ended in a steep
slope, so when she landed, she continued to slide down that. She spread her
arms and legs out to try to slow herself and did, just a little, before she
shot out into space again.
This one was not quite a
vertical cliff, so she hit a few times on the way down, each time bouncing
further away from the mountainside. She landed in the top of a young pine tree,
which stopped her, the branches giving away as she tumbled through them.
She dropped into some thick
brush. It cushioned her fall, while the tree deposited its load of snow on her.
