Genre: Christian Fiction

Thoughts: Really enjoyed it.

Book Synopsis:

Orphaned as an infant, Madeline Snow grew up in the Shaker community--the perfect place to learn reverence, hard work, and a love for God that surpasses the need for an earthly family. But the difference between what the Bible says and what the Shakers taught was too much for Madeline, so when she came of age, she left the safety of her home for a new life with her much older sister.

Madeline had been trained to grow herbs and make medicine by the best herbalists in her community, but in the wild Oregon Outback finding a husband is the only proper occupation for a single lady. Madeline left the Shaker community, but her devotion to God and the principle of celibacy, are unchanged. Finding a husband to direct her life is her last priority.

But her sister and guardian is just as stubborn as Madeline. Madeline will marry, whether she wants to or not.

Unfortunately for Madeline, finding a husband isn't simply a matter of falling in love. Some men are off limits, no matter how they make your heart thunder.

Review:

I'll admit that this isn't the type of book I would have normally picked up, but I'm so glad I read it. Hearts to God is such a romantic story of a strong woman who decides to go against the grain and can't understand why people are not being treated equally. The love she developed for Doc Lee, a mixed-race citizen, is both heartwarming and tear-jerking as the scenes of racism unfold. I highly recommend this book to anyone who love Christian romance.

Crushed (The Witch-Game Books) by K.C. Blake Review

Title: Crushed
Series: The Witch-Game Books
Author: K.C. Blake
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Pages: 213
Price: $2.99
Thoughts: Read it in one day!

Book Synopsis:

The Noah sisters rule Titan High with their beauty, brains, and magical powers.

Each year they play a secret game: Crushed. The girls pick their targets carefully and blow enchanted dust into the boy’s faces, charming them. The girls give the boys commands, tasks to perform. If the boy completes the task, the witch's power grows. At the end of the year the girls call their spells back and test them to see how much power they've gained. The witch with the most power wins a year's worth of saved up allowance from her sisters.

This year Kristen chooses the wrong boy to mess with after Brittany dares her to Crush him. Ordinarily Kristen wouldn't dream of doing something so risky, but she's in a bad mood and isn't thinking clearly. Right away she senses something is wrong. Instead of staring at her with puppy dog eyes, Zach Bevian (also known as tall, dark, and scary) glares at her, a look that could kill. Then he hesitates when she gives him an order. Something is definitely wrong.

After being Crushed, Zach goes home to the family mansion and lets his anger ripple off him in deadly waves. The house shakes. Zach is also a powerful witch, but he has another dark secret. It involves his impulsive and mentally challenged sister.

Kristen almost dies that same day. Someone is trying to kill her, but she has more suspects than evidence. If the spell didn't take, it's possible Zach is trying to put her out of his misery. Or it could be her jealous sister Brittany. Or is there another witch at the school, a witch in hiding?

Zach decides to play along and pretend to be enchanted rather than risk exposing the truth about himself. If Kristen is going to play games with boys, maybe she should be taught a lesson. He sets out to show her the error of her ways. Then he gets caught up in a murder plot. Should he save her life or let her enemy get rid of her?

Review:

When I read the description of this book, I knew I was going to love it and I wasn't disappointed. I started the book yesterday afternoon and a little after 11PM, I had read the entire book. It was that good! I loved watching the characters grow and change with the events that were threw at them. Of course, watching Kristen and Zach grow closer and closer together was the best part. If you love young adult paranormal romance, you must read this book!

Isabella is unaware Lord Everard Ladness, heir to a dukedom, is obsessed with her and will go to any lengths to possess her.

Review:

I'm not sure where the negatives reviews came from for this book. One of the first things I loved about this book was that the author used language that fit the time period. I also loved that she wrote descriptions that allow you to become fully immersed in the story. In other words, Katy Walters knows how to show readers what's going on, rather than just telling them. I love that Isabella is such a strong character that isn't going to sit back and be forced to do things she doesn't want to do. If you enjoy regency romance, you're going to enjoy this book.

The Beauty--a chronic people pleaser who's had enough of her goody-two-shoes life

Since her mother's untimely death, crusader Josephine Callahan has served as New Jersey's First Lady. Acting as her father's official hostess in the governor's mansion is tantamount to living in a fishbowl, which makes S-E-X extremely difficult. On the brink of a nervous breakdown, frustrated Josie loses her usual good sense along with her cool and lets her assemblyman boyfriend sweet-talk her into an impromptu romantic getaway--something she would never consider if she had a clue someone is trying to kill her.

The Beast--an incurable bad boy who refuses to admit beneath his scars lurks a hero.

A deliberately twisted message, via the governor's spiteful assistant, misleads ex Special Forces officer, DJ Ryder, as to the true objective of his freelance assignment. He's told to, not only track down the governor's classy daughter and hold her in protective custody, but to also teach her a lesson by letting her believe she's been kidnapped.

When Josie discovers the scarred, but still sexy, badass has played her for a fool, she retaliates by feigning a raging case of Stockholm syndrome, teasing the brute until all he can think of is the 'hold her' part of his orders. How can Ryder concentrate on keeping Josie safe when he's busy avoiding the danger she poses to his heart?

Review:

From page one this book is funny and sexy. I mean imagine a big, bad ass guy who's afraid of tiny, fluffy dogs. The book gets better and better, becoming more and more sexy as a woman who is thought to be meek and well-mannered turns out to be downright naughty and a guy who is thought to be a scarred bad boy starts to fall in love. This romance isn't sweet and lovey dovey; it's hot, funny, and oh so sexy.

Behind the Walls (Jolie Gentil Cozy Mystery Series) by Elaine Orr Review

Title: Behind the Walls
Series: Jolie Gentil Cozy Mystery Series
Author: Elaine Orr
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Pages: 242
Price: $2.99
Thoughts: Perfect cozy mystery.

Book Synopsis:

Someone will kill for what's hidden behind the walls of the hurricane-damaged house Jolie bought. After Jolie and Scoobie find a small sack of jewelry as they do a mold attack on her bungalow, Jolie is pursued by a purse thief and a burglar. But the guy she's most worried about is the one who left an elderly auctioneer dead on her porch swing. In between appraising houses and planning a fundraiser for the food pantry (can you say liquid string contest?), Jolie tries to figure out if there is more stolen bounty in her New Jersey beach town. Is the feared killer the same person who burned some vacant houses, or the as-yet unmasked Peeping Tom? And are they willing to kill again to get to the hidden riches?

Her friends and local police warn her to butt out, but that's just encouragement for a woman who likes to get to the bottom of things. Jolie wrestles with fear as she tries to get her cat, Jazz, to feel at home in the new house. Maybe an unexpected visitor can be a substitute for Aunt Madge's golden retrievers.

And then there's her love life. Jolie also needs to decide if she really wants to get back with her former boyfriend, Ocean Alley Press reporter George Winters. Or are feelings for someone else trying to get her attention?

Review:

Behind the Walls by Elaine Orr has all the elements of an excellent cozy mystery. There are laughs, loveable characters, and, of course, an excellent mystery. This is the perfect read to cozy up with to enjoy the last few weeks of winter. I only wish I had a fireplace to have curled up and read this book next to. If you love cozy mystery, read this one.

Murder Takes The Cake (Daphne Martin Cake Mysteries) by Gayle Trent Review

Title: Murder Takes the Cake
Series: Daphne Martin Cake Mysteries, Book 1
Author: Gayle Trent
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Pages: 288
Price: $7.69
Thoughts: LOVED IT!

Book Synopsis:

A routine cake delivery becomes a culinary nightmare when a small-town baker discovers her first client’s dead body in this irresistible new mystery series. It’ll take more than a little sugar to convince folks Daphne Martin’s freshly baked spice cake was not to blame for the mysterious death of town gossip Yodel Watson. Getting her new cake decorating business, Daphne’s Delectable Cakes, off the ground is hard enough now that Daphne’s moved back to her southern Virginia hometown, but orders have been even slower since she found Yodel’s body. She soon realizes, however, that just about everybody in town had a reason to poison the cantankerous busybody, from the philandering pet shop owner, to Yodel’s church potluck nemesis, to the Save-A-Buck’s cranky produce manager-turned-bagger. Now, to help prove she’s no confectionary killer, Daphne recruits her old flame, Ben Jacobs, editor of the local newspaper, and quickly stirs up a long-hidden family scandal that just might hold the secret ingredient she needs to solve the case. All she’s got to do is roll up her sleeves and get her hands a little dirty before the real culprit decides that taking sweet revenge on Daphne will be icing on the cake.

Review:

Love, love, love Gayle Trent's work. I started out reading book four of the series so it was nice to come back and read book one. Murder Takes the Cake is not only an awesome mystery, but it has characters that you can't help but love. I also love how there are so many little mini mysteries that come together in the end. Trent is such a talented author, but I love the fact that she really knows what she's talking about. When she writes about cake baking and decorating, you can tell she's a master baker as well as an awesome author.

Murder Strikes a Pose (A Downward Dog Mystery) by Tracy Weber Review

Title: Murder Strikes a Pose
Series: A Downward Dog Mystery
Author: Tracy Weber
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Pages: 290
Price: $8.69
Thoughts: A fast-paced cozy mystery.

Book Synopsis:

When George and Bella—a homeless alcoholic and his intimidating German shepherd—disturb the peace outside her studio, yoga instructor Kate Davidson’s Zen-like calm is stretched to the breaking point. Kate tries to get rid of them before Bella scares the yoga pants off her students. Instead, the three form an unlikely friendship.

One night Kate finds George’s body behind her studio. The police dismiss his murder as a drug-related street crime, but she knows George wasn’t a dealer. So Kate starts digging into George’s past while also looking for someone to adopt Bella before she’s sent to the big dog park in the sky. With the murderer nipping at her heels, Kate has to work fast or her next Corpse Pose may be for real.

Review:

I have to agree with other reviewers in that I love that the main character, Kate, isn't perfect. As much as she wants to be a laid back person who can adapt and remain mellow, she fails miserably. She lets a ill-mannered dog get under her skin and acts inappropriately. However, the dog is soon in her care and things are far from laid back. Can she overcome all the stress, find a murderer, and save a dog from an unfortunate fate?

Murder Strikes a Pose is a delightful cozy mystery that is fast-paced and a must for dog lovers. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A Girl and Her Kindle was provided a copy of Murder Strikes a Pose in exchange for an honest review.

***WARNING***

Appropriate for readers 16 years and up. This novel contains heavy life issues that some might find offensive.

Review:

It's not all about vampires and werewolves fighting for a strange girl's affections. Young adult novels can explore real areas of life that can be troubling and confusing for teenagers. Destructive Silence is an entertaining read that deals with difficult issues. It's also an extremely emotional read that explores some of the most devastating events a teen may encounter. Whether you're a teen or a mother looking for a book for her daughter, I recommend this book.

Caution: Man at Work by Linda Wisdom Review

Price: $3.99
Thoughts: Captivating and sexy romance.

Book Synopsis:

Cole Bishop had appeared in her hour of need and she'd done it--hired him--a male housekeeper! Perhaps now, with her twin boys in his care, she could get back to her demanding career in advertising.

In no time her chaotic household was running smoothly. The boys were in heaven. But Kelly Connors hadn't counted on Cole insinuating himself into her life so personally...so passionately. Nor was she prepared for her ex-husband's intrusion on their newfound domestic bliss or his vicious threats to take the children from her. And when the boys suddenly vanished, Kelly was terrified, torn.

Had she asked too much, wanting her children, her career, her independence--and the man she loved? Could Cole--a journalist doing "undercover" research on house-husbanding--help her find both her boys and all the answers?

Review:

Oh, how I loved this romance! I mean, who doesn't love a man who cooks and cleans? Okay, okay Kelly Conners does hire Cole to do the work, but how could a single woman resist a man who seems to be all she's ever looked for? The Cured by David Wind and Terese Ramin

Title: The Cured
Author: David Wind and Terese Ramin
Genre: Suspense
Pages: 296
Price: $4.99
Thoughts: Surprised by how quickly it sucked me in.

Book Synopsis:

When over 4000 people world-wide had died after taking a cure for cancer, the drug was recalled. But the questions kept coming. Was it contamination? Was it sabotage? Or, was it outright murder by an insane research scientist to retaliate against the pharmaceutical giant he worked for and to avenge the death of his wife?

And everyone wanted Doctor Donald Brockman! The lawyers wanted answers; the FDA wanted answers and, Homeland Security wanted the doctor!

When the 911 code flashed across her beeper, Dr. Kira Brockman went cold. The one thing she had been dreading had happened and her life as she knew it had been changed, and the change was for the worst!

The wrong people had found her father!

She knew she had very little time to get out of the hospital, to find her brother and to run before Homeland Security and the FBI found them, and they were not the only ones: the lawyers who were in the midst of a huge class action suit against the international pharmaceutical manufacturing giant who had sold the cancer cure wanted her and the evidence she had as well as the lethal security team from the drug company who was trying to stop Kira Brockman from disclosing the evidence only she could get—evidence that would save her father—and they would use any means necessary to stop her.

And so begins the heart stopping cross country race to save her father's life and prove he was not responsible for the deaths of 4,000 people—The Cured—who had survived cancer because of his medication and then inexplicably died from the very cure he’d created.

Review:

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not normally the type to pick up a medical suspense novel, but am so glad I picked this one up. From page one I was hooked. This is the type of novel that causes sweat to bead at your brow as you read through each anxiety-filled scene. Wind and Ramin have done such an excellent job and developing characters and a storyline that is believable, which makes it even more suspenseful. If you love medical suspense novels, you're going to love this one.

Guardian Angel by Linda Wisdom Review

Title: Guardian Angel
Author: Linda Wisdom
Genre: Romance
Pages: 145
Price: $3.99
Thoughts: Loved the strong female lead who falls for the man she's protecting.

Book Synopsis:

The lady in command—a graduate of Annapolis—beautiful Alex Page had put a career in Naval Intelligence and a bitter marriage behind her. Now, as security chief of a major firm, her main charge was guarding the body of its dashing president.

Proud, aloof, an absolute professional, Alex had no interest in protecting Jared Templeton from the exquisite society women who assaulted his magnificent body by night—no interest in challenging the Sydney Sorceress or the South Seas Siren—until, without warning, the climate changed. Suddenly the man who moved through women like a shark through shoals of fish launched a calculated attack on her senses. And Alex, master of self-defense, could no longer guarantee the safety of her own heart.

Review:

I love how strong of a character Alex Page is, but what I loved even more was watching her fall in love with a man she was hired to protect. It's such a fun romance that is of course incredibly sexy as well.

Bell, Book, and Sandals (Maxie Duncan, Book 1) by Melissa L. Webb Review

Title: Bell, Book, and Sandals
Series: Maxie Duncan, Book 1
Author: Melissa L. Webb
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 189
Price: $2.99 or FREE for Prime Members
Thoughts: LOVED IT!

Book Synopsis:

Sometimes life can be a real witch!

Meet Maxie Duncan. Your average 23-year-old blonde. If you can call being wealthy, gorgeous, and knowing what the future holds at times, average.

After her fiancé blindsides her with a breakup at their favorite restaurant, she leaves Maine for a shot at being Hollywood's new 'it girl.' There's only one problem. She's never acted a day in her life.

When a big Hollywood director sends her packing, she realizes if she wants to stay in L.A., she may have to become a normal girl after all. But normal has never been in the cards for her. Strange things keep happening wherever she goes, a red-eyed shadow no one else sees is stalking her, and to top it off, she may be falling in love again, with either the bookish guy next door, or Hollywood's hottest leading man.

But everything isn't what it seems. Someone's keeping secrets from her. Is it her new friends at the apartment building she moved into? Or is it Ryan Everheart, the actor who wants to sweep her off her feet? And why are her feet suddenly floating off the ground?

It's enough to drive a girl insane. All Maxie wants to do is ride off into the sunset with her one true love and find a killer pair of Manolo Blahniks on the way. But how's a girl supposed to focus on a love life and shopping when everywhere she turns someone or something is trying to kill her?

Review:

I'll admit that I just wanted to smack Maxie to begin with. She was your typical shallow, rich girl who had no idea what real life was all about. HOWEVER, after finishing the book, I realize that the author did this on purpose. Watching Maxie grow into a caring, down to earth (or at least closer to earth) girl was part of why this book was so wonderful. I couldn't help but love this book, Melissa L. Webb has created some awesome characters and a wonderful beginning to a series that I can't wait to read more of. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves urban fantasies.

Title: Starlet's Run
Series: The Starlet Series #2
Author: Carla J Hanna
Genre: Young Adult
Pages: 325
Price: $3.99
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Book Synopsis:

Love. Intentions. Acting. Life is more complicated than a Hollywood story.

Fictional actress Liana Marie Michael writes her second memoir, Starlet's Run, as she suffers through the Five Stages of Grief. But when Lia's scripts speak for her and drama becomes her life, can she find the strength to run her own lines and shape her new role?
~ - ~
I'm actress Liana Marie Michael. Hollywood's obsession with beauty made my actress-mother stay competitive. Athletes use steroids. Actors use plastic surgery and anti-aging drugs. So now I'm a physical mess inside, dealing with it, and starring in a major motion picture.

Of course I can't quit. I have brain surgery, feel alive at Grandma's Montana ranch, go back to Hollywood and act. My boyfriend, Manuel, and I want to get married. Everyone has an opinion. I ignore the millions of naysayers until consequences turn dire.

I believe that dwelling on pain is a waste of time. Indecision is exhausting. I want to write my own future. But I'm only eighteen years old.

In a world where an actress is a product and everyone is a critic, can our young love survive? Should it?

Review:

I love the idea of this series. Reading the memoirs of a fictional actress is such a fun idea that brings about real young adult issues in an entertaining way. This was a wonderful sequel to the series and I highly recommend it to those looking for a young adult series that isn't paranormal in nature.

Author: Hallee Bridgeman
Genre: Christian Romance
Pages: 200
Price: $3.99
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Book Synopsis:

To Robin Bartlett, men were nothing more than violent users. After a hair-raising childhood, Robin and her two younger half sisters battled simply to survive. Determined to give her sisters a very different life from that of their mother; to never have to rely on a man for anything, she worked two jobs and put them both through college, while accepting help from no one. Her heart had turned to ice and she had no use for men or God.

Antonio "Tony" Viscolli had grown up on the streets, homeless. At seventeen, he entered a downtown church with the intent of casing it, but found himself on his knees at the alter. After being fostered by the youth minister, Tony followed God's leading and eventually became a very successful and powerful businessman. In a fallen world, he was a gem.

When Tony bought the restaurant where Robin bartended, she immediately resented his intrusion into her well ordered, but exhausting, life. She suspected his offering her special attention and constant kindness was merely his way of expecting something from her in return, something she wasn't willing to give.

Tony knew God had led him to Robin. Would she ever allow herself to trust him? Could she ever allow herself to trust God? Or would the winter of their tragic youth rise from the shadows of the past and freeze any chance at happiness?

Book Synopsis:

Book 1 of the Gods with Fangs Trilogy. The story continues in Book 2 - Unleashing Jupiter.
Cora McNeil's world has been turned upside down. Vampires have effortlessly taken over the world after meticulously placing themselves in positions of power over a century's time. They claim to have pure intentions: promising to lead mankind to a better way of life using their wealth, wisdom, and immunity to the selfish nature of humanity. However, many citizens are skeptical of their intentions, including Cora's father. His defiance leads him down a dangerous path and Cora is left with no choice but to try to protect her father from himself. But for Cora, the trouble is only just beginning as her life intertwines with those of three incredibly powerful vampires whose machinations may determine the fate of us all.

Review:

Not in the mood for giggling teenagers who throw themselves at the vampire hunk? Read this! Gods With Fangs is such a unique take on the vampire genre. I really enjoyed the political stance of the book. It made you question whether or not it was okay for vampires to feed when they were feeding on criminals. I like that the book makes you question how you would feel if tossed into a world like this one. D.C. Armstrong has created a vampire trilogy that is refreshingly new and ventures into unexplored realms. I highly recommend this book for vampire fans and those that love the paranormal.

Review:

I just love the Zoe Donovan Mystery series. This one had such a sweet ending that of course left me wanting more. The mystery itself was also fantastic. I love that Daley leads you down so many paths, but you're never quite sure who did the deed. If you love cozy mysteries and haven't read the Zoe Donovan series, read it!
