Eros (Olympiana) by Helen Harper Review

Title: Eros
Series: Olympiana
Author: Helen Harper
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 333
Price: $4.99
Thoughts: Awesome, fast-paced read.

Book Synopsis:

William Shakespeare once wrote that, “Cupid is a knavish lad, thus to make poor females mad.” The trouble is that Cupid himself would probably agree…

As probably the last person in the world who’d appreciate hearts, flowers and romance, Coop is convinced that true love doesn’t exist – which is rather unfortunate considering he’s also known as Cupid, the God of Love. He’d rather spend his days drinking, womanising and generally having as much fun as he possible can. As far as he’s concerned, shooting people with bolts of pure love is a waste of his time…but then his path crosses with that of shy and retiring Skye Sawyer and nothing will ever be quite the same again.

Eros is a seductive re-telling of the classic Greek myth, Cupid and Psyche.

Review:

I literally fell in love with this story from the first few pages. Helen Harper has created such an amazing tale. This book is incredibly fast-paced and impossible to put down. If you love retellings of stories of old, you're going to love Eros by Helen Harper.

Review:

Oh. My. God! I loved this book!!! First of all, I love that Ivie did what so many women have always wanted to do to a guy that cheated on her. Turning her ex-fiance into a skunk was hilarious and the book just gets better from there. Another one of my favorite parts was how "excited" Ivie gets anytime she performs magic. If you're looking for a hot and steamy urban fantasy, this is it. And talk about an awesome ending! I really hope there's another book coming. I can't say enough about this book.

An Excerpt from Waltz in Time by Eugenia Riley

Lost in time in the romantic Old South!

Andre was standing in the shadows of the veranda, sipping brandy, when he heard the clamor in Stephanie’s room. Seconds later, one of her French doors banged open, and he observed Stephanie doing a silly little dance with a fireplace broom before bursting outside. In amazement, he watched her wriggle her way down the veranda, all the while bent over thrashing with her ridiculous little broom, her derriere bobbing becomingly.
He watched her turn at the sound of his laughter, regarding him in shock, wisps of hair trailing enticingly about her face. "Are you practicing some quaint new housekeeping technique, Madame Sergeant?" he called.
Stephanie was taken aback by the sight of him in the moonlight, his shirt partially unbuttoned, a snifter of brandy in his hand, and merriment glinting in his eyes. Embarrassed, she stammered, "I—I didn’t see you standing there."
"Obviously not," he drawled, "or you doubtless would have swept me out of your way, too."
Stephanie had to laugh.
Andre drew several steps closer, eyeing her in mingled amusement and perplexity. "Madame, you are forever delighting me with new aspects of your character." He nodded toward the broom she held. "Tell me, are you so obsessed with cleanliness that you would resort to such absurd measures? I’m sure we’ve a full-size broom somewhere down in the butler’s pantry."
Stephanie chortled. "I guess I must have looked pretty silly."
He eyed her intently. "Silly is not the word I would have chosen, but you definitely intrigued me."
"You don’t understand. I was sweeping a mouse out of my room."
"Ah," he murmured. "Heaven help the poor rodent that crosses the path of the formidable Madame Sergeant."
She cast him a scolding look.
He offered her his snifter. "Here, have a drink to calm yourself."
Propping her broom against the house, she waved him off. "I assure you, I’m no swooning woman with a bad case of nerves."
"On the contrary, you appeared on the verge of apoplexy just now, so I insist." He pressed the snifter into her hands. "Besides, this is quite an excellent French brandy."
After slanting him another chiding glance, Stephanie lifted the snifter and took a slow sip, feeling a decadent thrill to be sharing the same glass with him. "You’re right—it’s wonderful." She handed the snifter back, feeling a new twinge of excitement as their fingers brushed. "Now if you’ll excuse me . . ."
"But I don’t excuse you," he replied.
Stephanie felt her hackles rising. "Look, if you’re planning to lecture me again regarding Henry Robillard, you can just forget it."
Andre whistled. "Why would you assume I was going to lecture you again?"
"Because you’re always trying to interfere in matters that are none your concern."
Andre shook his head. "Those who live under my roof are none of my concern? Whence do you hail, Madame, that you’ve acquired such peculiar notions?"
Stephanie fought a grudging smile; she supposed that, from the perspective of the typical nineteenth century male, he had a point. "I guess in some ways, I must seem odd to you."
He offered her a conciliatory smile. "Why don’t we just try to call a truce for now?"
"A truce?" She flashed him a superior look. "If you’re so anxious to establish peace, is that why you left the tin of bonbons in my room?"
He chuckled. "You seem to be suffering from the delusion that some mysterious person keeps visiting your room."
"I know you have."
He regarded her sheepishly. "Madame, as I’ve stated previously, I do regret our little disagreements. I’d like you to realize I’m really not so terrible a fellow."
"Yes, you’ve convinced me you’re a saint," she quipped back. "But now I must go in."
He touched her arm. "No, please stay for a while."
"Why?" she asked, intrigued and disarmed.
He shook his head wonderingly. "You really don’t know, do you?"
"No, but I could guess."
"If you guessed, you’d be wrong," he stated.
"Would I?" Stephanie crossed her arms over her bosom. "You know, I’d love to be wrong about you for a change. So tell me why I should stay."
Turning toward the railing, he made a sweeping gesture. "Because it’s a sin to turn one’s back on so beautiful a night."
Caught off-guard by his words, Stephanie stared out at the picturesque moonlit grounds. She watched the foliage stir in the breeze. The light was exquisite, and the scent of the air was intoxicating. The night was incredible, she had to admit it. And he was right—she hadn’t even noticed.
Andre moved closer to her. "Look, Madame. See how beautiful the moon is, and watch the light dance on the Spanish moss. Hear the whistle of the wind and the sawing of the crickets, smell the jasmine, the roses."
Stephanie felt her senses stirring at his words, along with an unexpected tenderness, and twinges of regret. How long had it been since she’d taken the time to gaze out at a beautiful night? But could she afford to do so with him so temptingly close? Remembering how they’d both almost lost control in his office earlier that day, she didn’t think so.
"Yes, the night is lovely," she acknowledged, her voice quivering slightly. "But I mustn’t linger."
"Why? Does a night like this bring memories of your departed husband? Does it make you sad?"
Amazed by his insight, and feeling a rush of bittersweet emotion, Stephanie nonetheless shook her head. "My husband would never have wanted me to look at a beautiful night and feel sad."
Andre nodded. "Then he was quite a noble fellow."
"Yes, he was."
He edged closer still, regarding her wistfully. "The night can bring out secret yearnings, you know."
His words, while tantalizing, put Stephanie in a half panic. "Look, I really can’t be having this conversation with you."
He touched her shoulder. "Wait. You have no real idea what I’m talking about, do you?"
Bewildered, she could only stare at him.
Once again, he gestured out at the grounds. "When I was young, my family lived in a big house south of town. In the evenings, all of us used to gather on the front gallery, and Mama would read to us children."
"How charming," she murmured.
"She’d also tell stories of our family history, of her and Papa’s travels. On spring or summer nights, we children used to play on the front lawn. We’d lie in the grass on our backs, smell the magnolia blossoms and look up at the stars, even dream of how we might visit the heavens."
Stephanie found her gaze drawn up to the sky. The images he spun were entrancing.
"I hear you read to my children now," he went on. "Did anyone read to you when you were young?"
"Of course," she replied tightly. "My parents did."
Gently, he teased, "And what was the stern Madame Sergeant reared on? Perhaps lectures on household efficiency, or mastering one’s schedule?"
She rolled her eyes at him. "Certainly not. My parents read me Perrault and Hans Christian Anderson, the Arabian nights."
"Ah, fairy tales. Then we shared some of the same stories."
"I suppose we did."
"And there was also a time when Madame was more fanciful, no? That is, before you became preoccupied with agendas and rules, and silly little brooms."
Stephanie couldn’t answer him. She was fighting an unexpected lump in her throat.
Andre looked toward the sky. "As a boy, I used to gaze up at those heavens and imagine myself gathering stars in a big basket."
"What a beautiful image."
"And you? Did you have such yearnings?"
Stephanie hesitated, realizing this conversation could stray easily into dangerous territory. She looked up at the sky, and felt poignant memories welling up. "I’ve never gotten to travel much. Sometimes when I was young, I used to stare up at the night sky and wonder what it would be like to see the moon and those stars from another perspective—like standing in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, or on the Left Bank in Paris, or in the Strand in London."
He reached out to touch her cheek. "I’ve been to all those places, Stephanie. I could take you there."
She shut her eyes. She dared not answer him.
"Stephanie, look at me."
She opened her eyes to see him gazing at her soulfully. The night swirled about them, like a sensual blanket enfolding them, pulling them closer.
"What do you yearn for now?" he whispered.
Oh, he could be devastating! Even as her heart thrummed out a passionate response, she knew she dared not answer honestly.
"I—I think it’s time for us to call it a night."
Surprising her, he only smiled and sipped his brandy. "Pleasant dreams, Stephanie."
Unsteadily, she turned and reentered her bedroom. Already she very much feared her dreams would be of him . . .

Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Pages: 416
Price: $4.61
Thoughts: A great ending to an amazing series.

Book Synopsis:

To say that Sophie Bloom is at the top of her game with one only week until spring equinox and the final showdown with Zeus and Hades would be, well, lying. The Goddess of Spring feels more like the Goddess of Bzz Thanks For Playing than the savior of humanity. And could her relationships be any more messed up?

Good times.

Sophie is convinced that things can’t get any worse than crawling back to her mother Demeter and begging for help. But she’s about to find out how very wrong she is.

It’s a race against time for Sophie to implement the big battle strategy in the YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology finale My Life From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book three of this teen fantasy romance series. Save herself; save the world. Humanity may be screwed.

Review:

Bittersweet. An excellent book, but sad to see the trilogy end. If you love sassy characters, read this series. If you love young adult paranormal romance, read this book. If you're just looking for a kickass book, read this book! Do I really need to say more? This series is a must for diehard YA fans.

Dangerous Pursuit (The Protectors) by Margaret Daley Review

Title: Dangerous Pursuits
Series: The Protectors
Author: Margaret Daley
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Pages: 184
Price: $0.99
Thoughts: A real page-turner.

Book Synopsis:

Reading about danger never prepared Samantha Prince for the desperate phone call from her brother in Brazil that sent her from the safety of her New Orleans bookstore into the rugged, inhospitable Amazon in search of him and a hidden treasure. And reading about romance never prepared Samantha to resist the mysterious appeal of Brock Slader, a guide she hired to help her in her quest.

Alone with Brock in an alien world of orchids and anacondas, primitive headhunters and very up-to-date gunmen, she struggles to keep their relationship strictly business. Will Samantha survive the dangers in the jungle only to have her heart broken by a man who lives on the edge—no strings attached?

Review:

I'll admit that I wasn't sure if this book would be right for me, but I was really surprised. Dangerous Pursuit pulls you in from page one and doesn't let you go. It's funny that the book begins with a woman looking for a book that won't keep you up past your bedtime, when that's exactly what this book does. It's a wonderful romantic suspense filled with mystery, adventure, and great romance.

Review:

If you're looking for a hot contemporary romance to enjoy during lunch or before bed, I recommend this one. The sex scenes are charged and passionate, but not slutty and unmeaningful. All and all, Playing With Fire is a good romance to bring to the beach or anywhere else you need a quick read.

Review:

What a wonderful story! I'm a huge fan of young adult fantasy, but I adored this one because it was so unique. I loved the concept of this young girl being able to heal people, but not being allowed to. When Adrius shows up and the fantasy kicks into high gear, hold on, cause this book ain't slowing down. If you're looking for the next young adult fantasy to get wrapped up in, read this book!

Bloodfire (Blood Destiny 1) by Helen Harper Review

Title: Bloodfire
Series: Blood Destiny 1
Author: Helen Harper
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 248
Price: $2.99
Thoughts: Tactical and descriptive.

Book Synopsis:

Mackenzie Smith has always known that she was different. Growing up as the only human in a pack of rural shapeshifters will do that to you, but then couple it with some mean fighting skills and a fiery temper and you end up with a woman that few will dare to cross. However, when the only father figure in her life is brutally murdered, and the dangerous Brethren with their predatory Lord Alpha come to investigate, Mack has to not only ensure the physical safety of her adopted family by hiding her apparent humanity, she also has to seek the blood-soaked vengeance that she craves.

Review:

I liked that this shapeshifter novel had a more tactical feel to it than any other I had read. I also enjoyed the author's descriptive nature. I love an author that can make the world of which they write come alive. Helen Harper does a wonderful job at showing you what's going on around Mackenzie rather than just telling you.

Target of Death by Madison Johns Review

Title: Target of Death
Series: A Cajun Cooking Cozy Mystery
Author: Madison Johns
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Pages: 170
Price: $0.99
Thoughts: A fast-paced, cozy mystery.

Book Synopsis:

When Tammy Rodrigue, known as Louisiana Sassy on the archery circuit, rolled into Bear Paw, Michigan, for the archery competition, Tournament of Trouble, she never expected to be considered a suspect in a murder investigation. Sure, the victim was killed via an arrow through his heart with the same white and pink fletches (feathers) like Tammy uses, but she had just come to town. Not only that, but she was just pulled out of a ditch by a mysterious man wearing a ski mask. Most women might be frightened, but not Tammy. She’s tough as nails and not about to be intimidated by anyone, not even the local archery hot shot, Daniel Adams, who turned out to be the man under the mask.

Tammy and her tag-along friend, Dixie, slid their way into town amidst a snowstorm and took shelter at the local restaurant, Hidden Pass, run by a kind senior citizen, Margarita Hickey, who offers them a place to stay. As it were, Margarita was down on her luck and her business had gone on hard times. She’s impressed when Tammy spices up the chili she ordered with her own brand of spices that she always carries with her. It’s then that a plan is hatched, and Tammy and Dixie devise a way to help Margarita by creating Cajun recipes that Margarita could serve during the winter festival.

As Tammy and Dixie begin to poke into Sheriff Simon Price’s murder investigation, they discover there are more secrets in this town than what’s hiding out in the Bayou back home. Margarita, not one to be left out in the cold, tags along, too. The victim, Clayton Percy, has cheated on his wife and has been flashing cash all over town, but nobody seems to know why. Or are they keeping it a secret? Will Tammy and Dixie be able to solve this mystery in time before the Tournament of Trouble, or will Tammy finally miss her mark?

Review:

A fast-paced, funny cozy mystery with great friendship and so much more. As someone who declares herself to be a foodie, I'm always drawn to culinary mysteries. I love to read about food almost more than I love to eat it. There was also plenty of action to keep this mystery interesting. Those that love cozy mysteries are going to enjoy this one.

Jay Widford, a mild-mannered horticulture writer from New York, sees this as a chance to nab the story of the century and also to redeem himself as a man. Unfortunately, the only available hunting guide in a 100-mile radius is Alaska "Allie" Wilde, a beautiful but high strung woman with a jealous ex.

Jay needs the story and Allie needs the money so they head to the remote Alaskan wilds together.

Moon Struck: Book 1 (When, Were, and Howl) by Jeanette Raleigh Excerpt

Moon Struck: Book 1 (When, Were, and Howl) by Jeanette Raleigh

Jen has never enjoyed the full moon. Not like her family and certainly not like her boss, Rob, whose monthly trysts leave the office in a shambles. Jen turns into a mouse on the full moon, the most disrespected form in the were-community.

Her crush on Rob only makes her deep loneliness and feelings of alienation worse. When her friend steals an amulet with the power to turn were-wolf, Jen decides to try it on... only to find that being a wolf isn't all its cracked up to be. Guaranteed to make you howl.

Excerpt of Moon Struck

After a full moon weekend spent locked in the closet for my own safety, I walked into the office on Monday morning to find my monitor broken on the floor with stapler, desk caddy, and papers strewn about. A sane person would think the office had been broken into. A sane person would be wrong.
I clamped down on my anxiety and tried to think of where to start. My brain was still in a muddle while I came down from my animal high. The full moon doesn’t lend itself to clear thinking. That’s when I heard the noise.
The first sound was a growl, low and deep.  That would be my boss, in his office doing…well. I might have been afraid hearing that kind of growl but for the hard bumps that followed and the whine. The man sounded like a wolf even in human form.
Then I heard sloshing kiss sounds and moans, feminine. His moon tryst was still in the office at ten o-clock in the morning?!!  I felt a few pity tears rise up and pushed them down hard. No way would Rob see me crying at work. No way in hellooooo…what was that on my desk?
I stepped over my upside-down inbox and stared at the desk, my desk. Claw marks gouged along the top and a few wolf hairs stuck on the corner where someone had chewed up the leg of the desk. I swallowed rage when the woman in the adjoining office giggled. Would this be the rest of my life?  I spend the moon night locked away, panicked and terrified only to walk into an office that smelled of wet fur. To top it all off, I have to deal with THIS?
The tears started to flow then, and I grabbed my purse and headed for the door. Rob could do without me for the day. The real estate market had tanked so hard, he could probably do without me for the year, maybe even the decade. Another growl and a giggle and I couldn’t get out fast enough.
I must have made noise opening the door because just as I was slipping out, a deep voice bellowed. “Jen, is that you out there?”

Female camaraderie and all that. But it had all gone too far. She gone too far. She had, after all, ruined someone's life. Hadn't she?

Having theatrically caught her boyfriend cheating, Rebecca, convinced she was born in the wrong era, has had it with these modern day men. She has even less regard for these immoral modern day women, (of which she highly suspects her best female friend Abigail is one), who tend to prey on men in committed relationships. What is wrong with them?! Don't they care that they're breaking hearts and destroying lives?! Rebecca, with her high morals and family values, would never even consider dating a married man. Which is exactly why, it is of no surprise her friends are at serious odds, when Rebecca finds herself doing exactly that. Dating a married man......
