Sapphire of Sirius
In a chamber of creation
I let love be near.
Eyes so dear, watching near
Symbols from stars beyond.

Carving the blue whisper in my wind
A dear so near, holding the flame close-by.
Rays of stars, in symbols of soul stars
A whisper of real.

To Honor and To Protect by Debra Webb and Regan Black Excerpt

Paperback Edition

A former solider must protect his ex-fiancée and his secret son in the next installment of The Specialists: Heroes Next Door

Before he could say "I do" on his wedding day eight years ago, former special ops soldier Drew Bryant was hustled away for a top secret mission. Everyone—including the bride he left behind—believes he's long dead. But now his former fiancée is on the run from a vengeful fugitive, and Drew is handpicked to bring her to safety.

When he finds Addi Collins deep in the swamplands of Louisiana—with the son he never knew existed—he has to earn her trust to protect her from a vindictive desperado. And prove he won't break her heart a second time.

Excerpt:

Addison Collins checked the fuel gauge, quickly calculating how many more miles she could put between her and the inevitable pursuit before they had to stop. Her brand-new BMW could’ve done that for her, but not this ancient, new-to-her Land Rover. That was what math was for, wasn’t it? This was the perfect example she would keep in the back of her mind for the day her son complained about his math homework.
“Mom, how much longer?”
She recognized that tone. He was about to complain but not about math. Using the rearview mirror, she aimed a confident smile at her son. His bright hair gleamed in the sunlight coming through the window, but the glare on his face bordered on mutinous.
She couldn’t blame him. They’d been on the road for two days straight and had another day left. Possibly more. “About another half hour and we’ll stop again.”
“I have to pee now.”
“You’ll have to hold it for a few minutes.”
“A half hour is thirty minutes. A few is more like three.”
Instead of maternal pride, Addison couldn’t help wondering why she’d ever been inclined to teach him the difference. “And how many threes are in thirty?”
“Ten.” He turned his face to the window. “I still have to pee.”
“All right. I’ll find a place to stop.”
“This car stinks,” he said a minute later.
“The car is clean. It’s just new-car smell.” With a persistent undertone of mildew, but she kept that thought to herself.
“But it’s an old car.”
“True.” Patience will pay off. “The car dealers spray a strong deodorizer to make it feel new.” They had periodically rolled down the windows, but the heavy-duty deodorizer scent lingered, punctuating the mildew rather than overpowering it. This vehicle might be a major step down in value from her BMW, but the dealer in Arizona had been willing to meet her trade and cash terms without any questions, and that had been priceless.
“Why?”
“So they can sell it faster.”
“Will our car stink like this when we go back home?”
“I don’t know.” It was the only safe answer because she hadn’t yet found the courage to tell her son they weren’t going back. She hadn’t lied to him and she wouldn’t start now, but she wasn’t ready to discuss it. The words he needed to hear to understand the gravity of their new situation just weren’t coming to her, and she wasn’t ready to cope with the fallout when he realized he wouldn’t see his friends again.
Her own grief was too fresh, her fear of the unknown too big. When she had a handle on her feelings, she would be better able to help him with his. Coward, an annoying little voice in her head muttered.
“It’s yucky in here,” he said, making a gagging noise. He had a point, though she wasn’t about to admit it. “I feel sick.”
Addison’s patience was fraying, but it wasn’t Andy’s fault they were in this mess. No, this was all her doing. She’d been the one to screw up their picture-perfect life by getting conned by a not-nearly-perfect man. He’d looked like Mr. Right, and until a few days ago, she’d been sure he was the right man for both her and Andy. The only silver lining—and she was clinging to it—was that she’d learned the truth before the wedding.

Excerpt:

In this excerpt for Any Port in a Storm. Jolie is about to learn that a helpful receptionist is not who she thinks she is.

"I'm so rude. I didn't tell you my name. It's Ruth. I've been with Mr. Hardin for almost ten years." She handed me a glass with ice and what looked like pinkish water. "I put some of that new flavoring in it." She gave me a big smile and returned to her desk.
I had really wanted plain water, but it was a pleasant taste, strawberry, I thought. I glanced at my phone again. The Grossos were ten minutes late. They lived very close to the office, so I was mildly irritated. And very sleepy.
It was another two or three minutes before I realized that I was more than tired. My eyes were out of focus. "I think, I think I better…" I stood and then quickly sat back down.
Ruth got up and walked toward me. Her friendly smile was replaced by a very menacing look. Or maybe two looks. It was hard to tell.
"You don't know who I am, do you?" she said, in a strident tone.
It took a great deal of effort to say, "No."
"Thanks to you, I don’t have any idea where my brother Joe is."
Crud. Joe Pedone's sister. "Are you, are you Mary Something?" I asked.
"Oh yes. Mary Jo. Joe Pedone's twin sister. And you and I are going to have a long talk." She walked back to her desk and fiddled with the phone for a moment.
It was very hard to think. I couldn't imagine that she would hurt me. Unless she was as screwy as her brother, who was not a nice man at all. I thought about Ramona. She knew what building I was in, but she had no idea of the suite. Not that it was a big building, but I wish someone knew where I was.
"Up you go." Mary Jo put her hand under my arm and helped me stand. "We're going into Mr. Hardin's office." She guided me to a chair that had a soft seat and upholstered arms, and picked up a roll of duct tape from the nearby desk and started to wrap it around my wrists, securing them to the arms of the chair.
This is not good. I just could not get my brain and limbs to cooperate. What did she give me?
"You're going to hear me out, and then you're going to tell the police that you were very, very wrong about my brother." She pulled a chair toward me and sat facing me.
Mary Jo's face was contorted in anger. "My Joe is a good man. He sent my mother a check every month. A good check. Now she has to live on Social Security and whatever I can give her, and it's not much. And I'm stuck working in this stupid office, watching the lawyers win tons of money for their clients. Do I get any kind of bonus when they win a big case? Not hardly."
She went on and on. My eyes had closed and then there was a loud whack and my head jerked back. She slapped me!
"You stay awake and listen to me!"
Her face was inches from mine, and I could see the spittle at the corners of her mouth. "What do you…what do you want?" The slap had made my neck hurt again.
"You are going to listen to me!" She was practically screeching now.
I realized she had probably picked five-thirty because the lawyers would have left, and maybe everyone else on this floor. My head wobbled, but I tried to look at her. I didn't want another slap.
"…and you're going to tell my mother you were wrong about Joe. Broke her heart, you did." She kept going. "I said listen to me!"
I was vaguely aware that her arm was raised, and I steeled myself for another slap.
"Ow! Let go of me!" Mary Jo yelled.
Someone had come into the room and shoved Mary Jo hard enough that she fell to her knees. And then Ramona was on Mary Jo's back and shoved her face into the carpet. And someone was screaming. I was pretty sure it wasn't me.
I heard a police siren, and then it stopped abruptly. Someone much bigger than Ramona and I ran into the office and he started shouting, too. If only these people would shut up.
Ramona was trying to unwrap the duct tape. "Jolie, Jolie! What did she give you?"
Really, I didn't feel that bad. It would be a lot better if I could lie down for a bit.

The Fearless Writer: Guest Post by Author Peggy Webb

When I’m not writing, I’m often reading. Currently I’m enjoying A Wide and Starry Sky, a fictionalized account of Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island) and his American wife. Somewhere in this book I discovered that RL Stevenson was called fearless because of his penchant for writing not only novels, but poetry, fiction and nonfiction articles and even song lyrics. I wanted to stand up and shout, YES! I can imagine he felt the same sort of hemmed-in panic I get at the very idea of having to do only one kind of writing.

Like Stevenson, I’ve spent the last thirty years writing such a broad range of fiction it’s impossible to pen me down. Do I write comedy? Yes, indeed. I cut my teeth on romantic comedies. Mystery? You bet. I get to flex both my comedic and my sleuthing muscles in the Southern Cousins (available now) and the Magnolia Wild series (coming this fall). Straight romance/women’s fiction? Yes, again. All you have to do is scroll through my list of more then 75 books to find straight romantic fare such as The Donovans of the Delta series and The Dixie Virgin Chronicles. Romantic suspense? Witch Dance and From a Distance. Song lyrics? You’ll find some of them in The Sweetest Halllelujah.
That leads me to my first love, literary fiction. The Sweetest Hallelujah and The Oleander Sisters as Elaine Hussey. The Tender Mercy of Roses as Anna Michaels. The Language of Silence as Peggy Webb. All of them recent books. All of them the very best work I’ve done. Ever!

And yet, writing literary fiction is so very intense, not at all the kind of story I can whip out in a few weeks. In fact, it took me more then ten years to write The Sweetest Hallelujah! And so I balance the intense times by penning more light-hearted fare and editing/revising my early romantic classics so you can enjoy them in digital format.

My latest book is Stars to Lead Me Home, a women’s fiction novel that made me remember why I love writing. The central characters are three women who have been friends for so long they can finish each other’s sentences. I have good friends like that, life-long friends who love me no matter what, who celebrate the good times and dispense chocolate and hugs in the bad times. Don’t miss this book! It will make you giggle and make you cry. You’re going to recognize these women, and I think you’ve going to love them.

Pub day is June 4th. You can preorder Stars to Lead Me Home: Love and Marriage, June, 2015 and save 50%. Because I love my readers, I’m also offering it at that price (eBook only) for the first three days after it goes live! Learn more about it at my website, www.peggywebb.com. As always, thanks for reading!

Book 3 of the bestselling Loveless and Dunn series

When aspiring-writer Mallory Reynolds packed up for New York City, she ditched more than her quiet hometown of Magnolia Bay—she left her high-school sweetheart, Josh Loveless, behind. But when the big city didn’t deliver big contracts on her novels, she turned to writing erotica under the pen name Farrah Ivory to spare her family any embarrassment. Soon, her scandalously-sexy series, The Lost Diaries of Scarlet, is a break-out hit. Just as Mallory begins to enjoy her sweet success, her publisher leaks her true identity and a media firestorm ensues. Exposed, she decides there’s nowhere to hide—except for home.

For Josh Loveless, getting over Mallory Reynolds hasn’t been easy, but he’s done his best to move on. For starters, he’s turned his love of the outdoors and rock-climbing into his own business. And just as things are starting to settle for him, he learns Mallory’s coming home to ride out her scandal, and suddenly his world is turned upside down again…

Can Mallory convince her friends and family that she’s still the same good-hearted girl they knew? And more importantly, can Josh trust the woman she’s become, and give her a second chance to rewrite their love story with a happy ending?

The Loveless and Dunn series
Book 1: Bet the House
Book 2: Pick Me
Book 3: Forget Me Not
A Very Married Christmas (A Loveless and Dunn Spinoff)
Stealing Hearts (A Loveless and Dunn Spinoff)

Excerpt:

Mallory Reynolds slunk lower in the driver’s seat, wishing she’d splurged for a rental car with tinted windows. She’d always dreamed of coming back to Magnolia Bay after making a name for herself—but this wasn’t what she had in mind.

As Main Street traffic slowed to a crawl, she surveyed the busy sidewalk, dread snaking in her stomach. So far she didn’t recognize a soul—she only hoped no one recognized her.

Maybe coming back to the Bay hadn’t been such a good idea after all—not that it was her idea to begin with. When she’d called her Aunt Delta the week before, it had only been to break the news of her publisher’s blunder, and to warn her mother’s sister that soon she would be seeing Facebook postings about how her sweet little niece, Magnolia Bay’s straight-A student, had been writing the scandalously sexy Scarlet Diaries series for the last two years under a pen name. But her Aunt Delta, ever the generous soul, had insisted that Mallory come back home to the Bay until the dust settled.

Driving south, watching the stretches of evergreens gradually thin to reveal the familiar expanse of her beloved Lowcountry marsh, Mallory had felt certain that whatever scandal she’d left behind in New York City couldn’t possibly follow her here. But now that she’d arrived—and steered straight into the town center—she feared she’d been hasty. Had she really been away from the Bay for five years? Some of the storefronts looked familiar to her, but plenty didn’t. And what about the pier—was that a wine bar? And since when were there food trucks lined up along the—

“Hey, watch it!”

At the loud voice, she swerved her gaze back to the road and slammed her foot on the brake just as the baseball-capped pedestrian smacked his palm on her hood.

“Oh my God.” Her hands shook as she struggled to lower the window and called out, “I’m sorry—I didn’t see you!”

The man came closer, close enough that she could see his eyes under the bill of his cap and recognition charged through her. She sucked in a startled breath. The faint beard and muscular arms didn’t compute, but she’d know those dark eyes anywhere.

“Josh?”

He squinted back at her. “Mallory?”

She tugged off her sunglasses. “I—I didn’t recognize you with all that…” She pointed to her own jawline.

“It’s not intentional,” he said. “I’ve been too busy to shave.”

She swallowed but the lump wouldn’t budge. When had he gotten so…ripped?

A horn sounded. She spun to scan the row of cars behind her.

“I could pull over,” she said.

“That’s okay, I can’t stop. I just came out to grab a bite—I have to get back to the store.”

She blinked up at him. “Store?”

“My store, Extreme Sports. I’m re-opening this weekend.”

He’d finally opened the store he’d always talked about? “That’s—Wow, that’s great.”

The horn sounded again. Josh gestured to the beater pickup she was glaring at in her rear view mirror.

“You better get moving before Mr. Rafferty rolls over you.” He gave her hood a friendly tap, far lighter than the angry whack he’d delivered earlier. “Welcome back.”

“Thanks,” she managed to answer as he walked off, her voice sounding as dazed as her thoughts.

When she heard the horn a third time, she pressed on the gas and lurched forward, forcing her eyes on the road ahead and not on the rear view mirror where she could see Josh reaching the sidewalk and disappearing inside Rocco’s.

Her heart sank with the gas pedal.

There it was. After five years, her and Josh’s first hello.

And it was as bittersweet as their last goodbye.

Background on the RC Investigations Team Created by V.R. Marks

Readers often ask me for a brief rundown of the RC Investigations series and it’s always a pleasure to share more details about these characters who feel as real as family to me.

The RC Investigations novels feature a team founded by Ross Carpenter and his closest friends, Rick Dreyer and Eva Battaglia. They worked together with an Army Special Ops team and now they specialize in investigative work for clients who prefer to keep things off the public record. Their specialized investigations approach also bridges the gap for overworked law enforcement departments.

The characters really came to life for me as I wrote The Thief and with each book, it's fun to see those relationships develop as they protect and assist each other through various challenges.

Ross and Allie take the leading roles in The Thief:
Allie Williams is on the run with incriminating evidence proving her company's new wonder-drug is lethal. In a last ditch effort to save lives, she races to the safety of her hometown, hiding in plain sight among the close knit community where she'll definitely be innocent until proven guilty.

The Witness stars Rick and Nicole:
The sole witness to murder, Nicole Livingston has been living a shadow of the life she once dreamed of. When her apartment building goes up in flames, she sees a chance to escape her protected identity and reclaim life on her terms. But her plan goes awry when a handsome stranger intervenes, offering assistance she didn't know she needed.

The Hostage features Eva and Carson:
Former Special Forces analyst, Eva Battaglia, used to be the hunter. Now, in the quiet town of Haleswood, SC she blends her linguistic and computer skills as the team analyst for RC Investigations. When someone from her Army days decides to exact revenge, she goes from being the hunter to the hunted in a matter of days.

Two former Navy SEALs are on a vengeance motivated odyssey to find who gang raped, beat beyond recognition, and nearly killed the film industry’s current sex goddess with a massive heroin injection.

Her husband, Mel Stone, and her foster father, Bob Kinsdy, scour three continents to uncover the reason the assailants turned Moira Boyer, into a heroin addict.

With support in the form of a two million dollar reward, they find the “Why” that sets them methodically on a circuitous path after the “Who”.

Grateful for Graduation: Fantastic Gifts to Mark Life’s Milestones

Do you have a high school or college graduate in your life? Does she love to read? Don’t be the boring aunt, uncle, grandparent or parent who simply sticks money in a card. Get her something she can really use and enjoy as she moves into the next phase of her life.

eReaders and Tablets

There are dozens of great eReaders and tablets on the market today, most of which are multi-functional. Your graduate will not only be able to carry works by her favorite authors, but may even be able to access some of the digital versions of her otherwise very expensive college books. She’ll also be able to keep in touch via social media, keep her schedule straight, and maybe even relax once in a while with a game or two. It’s a fun gift she’ll love, and with so many options you’ll definitely be able to find one in your price range.

This is Water, by David Foster Wallace

David Foster Wallace was an American Author who passed away in 2008. He had the opportunity to give a commencement speech only once, but what he said touched so many it was eventually turned into a hard-cover book (and can now also be found in eBook form). In This is Water, he talks about living a fulfilled adult life, learning compassion, and not getting caught up in the day-to-day. “It is about simple awareness – awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, that we have to keep reminding ourselves, over and over: ‘This is water, this is water.’”

The Freshman Survival Guide: Soulful Advice for Studying, Socializing, and Everything In Between

This one is great for the high school graduate going to college and I admit to playfully giving it to one of my cousins upon her graduation a few years ago. It’s written in a lighthearted manner that focuses less on the stress of going to college and more on the most effective and efficient ways to make friends and avoid disaster in the first few weeks of the new semester. The Freshman Survival Guide is a good, clean read – one you might even wish you had when you started college.

Sure there are tons of other gifts you could give a graduate. Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, junk for a dorm room or locker, a year’s supply of coffee pods (that’s actually not a bad idea), gift cards, mugs… the list goes on. But a heartfelt gift that provokes thought and/or proves truly useful? That’s something the graduate you love will really appreciate and cherish.

Review:

I love this series. Jordan K. Rose creates such wonderfully sexy characters. Best of all, you can enjoy these as stand alone novellas. I highly recommend this book if you love paranormal romance, hot men, and sexy vampires. Can't wait for more!

Joe, an ex-detective and a popular Dom, wasn’t gay. Not one little bit. He told himself that all the time he fought the inexplicable attraction he had for the gorgeous young submissive, Adam. Yet when he learns a psychopath responsible for two murders has set his sights on Adam, and Adam disappears, it suddenly seemed far more important to tell him something else.

Joe realizes Adam has become more important to him than his next breath, but if he can’t track down the psycho that was torturing and murdering submissives, Joe won’t ever be able to tell Adam anything else again, it will be far too late.

Excerpt 1

He trailed the yellow mini until he came to a late night 7-Eleven. Joe frowned. Where the hell was Adam going? He parked the mini at the side. Joe pulled the truck up alongside the mini and got out. Maybe Adam needed some milk or something. Adam walked up to Joe and shuffled his feet a little. “Thanks for following me home.”
Joe looked at the shop, astonished. “Where do you live?”
Adam blushed. “My apartment’s around the back. You don’t need to follow me further—
I’m home now.”
A trickle of something Joe didn’t like wound its way down his spine. “Adam, I don’t care where you live. I just want to make sure you get in safe.”
Adam blushed again. “It’s small. I can’t afford much.”
“I don’t care. I’m not going until I know you’re in.” Joe firmly set off to the back of the store.
Adam quickly caught up to him up and gestured to the fire escape. “It’s up there.”
Adam climbed the steps, Joe right on his heels. Joe saw the smashed padlock and the door ajar at the same time that Adam made a funny noise in his throat and took a step forward. Joe shot his arm out to block him.
Fuck. Last day on the job and he had no gun on him. Joe immediately stepped in front of Adam and pushed at the door. A smell like rusty nails hit Joe, and every hair on his arms stood up. Adam paled. Joe had been on the job too long not to have developed a strong stomach. “Stay here.”
He cursed again at his lack of a gun. Joe saw immediately the place was empty. It was one very small room, attached to a smaller space with a toilet just visible. Someone had attempted to close it off with a curtain, but that lay in tatters on the floor. The room was completely trashed. The drawers in the only chest were ripped open and smashed. Clothes had been torn and thrown about.
Joe heard a small gasp and whirled around to see Adam had taken a step inside the door. Joe followed Adam’s appalled gaze to the wall above what used to be Adam’s bed. On the wall, the only thing left on the wall was a blown up picture of Adam, the same one as the cover shot for the magazine. In what Joe knew was blood—from the smell—were scrawled the words:
Indulge me.

Review:

A truly great read and the beginning of what I feel will be a great series. It's a book that can be enjoyed by all ages, but perfect for middle school aged kids. I liked the characters, the budding romance, the fantasy...It's just a great read and I can't wait to read the next one.

Excerpt:

Katarina clutched the chair’s golden upholstery to keep from launching herself at him and wrapping her fingers around his arrogant throat. “I am Lady Katarina Fitzwilliam, sister to the Earl of Manning. I was kidnapped and brought here tonight against my will.”
He cocked his head. Then his mouth twitched. “Truly? What an exciting life you must lead…Lady Katarina, was it?” He chuckled deep in his chest, and took a step toward the chair.
She glared at him. “I am Lady Katarina Fitzwilliam, you dullard.”
And true ladies always run around London at night scandalously underdressed as Greek slaves?”
My brother and I were on our way to a masquerade ball when I was abducted.”
As was I, fair lady,” he bowed with an exaggerated flourish, “when I decided to come to this charming establishment instead. Perhaps if we had continued on our ways uninterrupted, we would even now be dancing together at the ball.”
That nasty laugh grated against her nerves worse than the screech of rusty nails, making her contemplate murder. If the scoundrel didn’t believe her story, killing him might be her only means of escape.

MOTHERS AND STARS: Guest Post by Author Peggy Webb

My mother not only shaped me, but she had a huge impact on my career.

Books were almost sacred to her. Around our house, the only legitimate excuse for getting out of chores was to say, “I’m reading.”

My love of reading, handed down by Mama, inspired me to become a writer. She used to travel with me to conferences and sit on the front row during my workshops, beaming while I stood at the podium and said, “I’ll answer any questions you have except those about writing love scenes.

Mama’s in the audience.” She loved it when my colleagues and more than a few fans started calling her Mama.

The closest I’ve ever come to putting a real person in one of my books was the Mama character in Driving Me Crazy. Everything about that feisty, courageous, independent character was my own mother. The only difference between her and her fictional counterpart was that I kept Mama alive in the book.

Though Mama has been gone a very long time, she influenced me once again in my latest women’s fiction novel, Stars to Lead Me Home:Love and Marriage. All three of the feisty, courageous protagonists are a nod to her. When Maggie moves Heaven and earth to win back her older daughter, shades of my own mother shine through.

You can now preorder the digital copy of Stars to Lead Me Home at a 40% savings. That price will only be good through June 4, so grab it while you can! Early reviewers call this women’s fiction novel the “Must Read book of 2015!” Learn more about the book at my website: www.peggywebb.com. Order at Amazon

Also enjoy The Thief and The Witness, the first two romantic suspense novels from V.R. Marks.

Excerpt:

"We have solid intelligence Eva Battaglia is being targeted by the Morcos family," Ross Carpenter said, as soon as the sheriff's office door closed.
Deputy Carson Morris glanced from Carpenter to the sheriff, wondering why he'd been invited to this private meeting.
"Morcos?" Sheriff Cochran's chair squeaked as he leaned back.
"They're international developers with sidelines in black market weapons and money laundering."
"What's their concern with Eva?"
Ross rubbed his forehead. "Years ago she worked a hostage rescue mission involving the owner's son and it didn't go as planned. We're tracking down those details. I'm hoping there's some place here in the court house where I can set up a temporary office for RC Investigations. That's safer than having her working alone in Columbia. It's not permanent. Just until we get this settled."
"There's office space up on the third floor," Sheriff Cochran said. "Let's go take a look."
Ross examined the area and paced the entire hallway, noting the elevator, main stairs, other offices, and fire stairs. "This can work."
Deputy Morris listened while Ross and the sheriff discussed Eva's schedule and responsibilities and managed to keep a straight face when Ross volunteered Eva's IT expertise to seal the deal.
"One last thing," Carpenter said. "I'd like someone assigned to Eva full time."
The sheriff groaned. "You know I don't have the manpower for that."
"Preferably Deputy Morris."
"Me?"
"She likes you," Carpenter said. "That's not easy to discern with Eva, I'll grant you that."
Carson held his peace, baffled by the statement. The woman was as prickly as a porcupine. From what he'd seen, getting shot last month had wounded her pride more than anything else.
"What do you expect out of him?"
"I expect you to treat this like undercover work, but you just have to be yourself. I need you to make sure she gets to and from work safely by either direct or indirect observation. If Rick or I hover, she'll bust us for it. And I expect you to inform me of any threats or suspicious contact."
He understood what might qualify as a threat, but suspicious contact? "Like what?"
"Morris, you were born and raised here in Haleswood," Carpenter said. "You'll recognize any strangers snooping around here, or at her room at the motel."
"True," the sheriff admitted. "But undercover is a tough thing to pull off in this town."
Ross grinned and clapped Carson on the shoulder. "You'll come up with something. It's not long term, I promise."
Carson glanced from one man to the other. He'd gone to high school with Ross. The sheriff had lived in the area all his life. All three of them knew there were no secrets in Haleswood. Undercover would be a unique challenge.
"It's not a typical assignment, that's for sure, deputy," Sheriff Cochran said. "But seeing as you're single, you're probably the person best suited to keep an eye on her without causing more problems."
"Stay close, be friendly," Carpenter said. "I'll let you know the minute we have the threat contained."
