The fireman is hot—able to burn me. But still, I crave the singe.
The professor is cold—brooding with intrigue, making me yearn for more.
The police officer easily unlocks my laugh—something I thought was caged for life.

Two years ago, before my cheating husband died, he promised he'd right his wrongs--and there were so many wrongs. On his deathbed, he swore he’d send a slew of men to worship me and treat me like a goddess.

I don't know how, but my husband kept that one promise. Unbelievably, I get to choose between three men—one’s perhaps too hot, another too cold, while the other might be just right. And faintly, I can hear my husband chuckling and whispering that I don’t have to choose.

Maybe—just maybe, they could all be mine...

Excerpt:

The set-up for this scene is that Jane Emory, the protagonist, has just performed the Heimlich maneuver for her friend, Bethany, who was choking during dinner:

Someone tries to take my shoulder and bodily move me. But I won’t have it. I need to keep Bethany in my view. I need to make sure she’s okay because I love her so much and if one more person dies on me I’ll buy a gun and…okay, not really. But I couldn’t stand life without her.
I fight strong arms, gripping me around my waist, pulling me away from Bethany. I kick, buck, do everything possible to get my body back under my own volition.
Whiskers rake my cheek. “Shh, shh, I got you,” a man whispers. His arms hold me even tighter.
That’s when I see the firemen around Bethany. Their royal blue pants, royal blue t-shirts, light blue gloves over large hands.
That’s it,” the man holding me says. “That’s it. You gotta make room for the men to work on your friend, baby.”
Baby?
I’m breathing so hard my lungs feel like there are fissures in every inch of them. The man has me in a weird grip, almost cupping one of my breasts, and I realize the position of my hands are forcing him to hold me that way. But I don’t let go of him.
You saved her?” the man whispers into my ear.
Yes, she saved me,” Bethany says loudly, smiling at me, still so red-looking it scares me. “She did the Heimlich thing. That’s my friend, Jane, Jane Emory. She’s super smart and super fast and she saved my life.”
I want to laugh at Bethany’s statements, but I just can’t. I want to cry. However, my hands relax against the man’s iron-like forearms. I notice the striations of his muscles there. They twitch, still holding me in a firm grip. He has blond hair. Golden. It sparkles in the light. His chest encompasses me from behind. It’s so firm, and his heart is beating into my back. His whiskers are still against me. This is intimate.

Loving the Hawke by Lana Williams

Victorian Romance. After five seasons as a wallflower, Lettie Fairchild is resigned to spinsterhood. Mostly. Determined to claim more meaning for her life than seeing her younger sisters married, she seeks a purpose. She finds what she’s looking for when she happens upon a book describing seven curses that plague London.

Nathaniel Hawke is attempting to adjust to civilian life after retiring from the military, but his injured leg and memories of his time in the service prevent an easy transition. On his long walks during London’s darkest hours, Nathaniel is appalled by what he sees taking place on the dirty streets and alleyways. He is determined to take action. Coming upon a proper, if rebellious, lady in the desolate area both intrigues and frustrates him.

Nathaniel’s disregard for his personal safety infuriates Lettie even as her heart is touched by his determination to aid the city’s neglected children.

As the two wounded souls stumble upon each other time and again in slums and ballrooms, they realize they fight a common cause--and share an unbridled passion.

Will the curse they fight be their downfall? Or will love win the day?

Excerpt:

You have no say over me, Mr. Hawke.”
What would your father say if he knew where you had spent the luncheon hour?”
Lettie gasped. “Are you threatening me?”
No. I am trying to keep you safe.”
You don’t know my name. Besides, I am old enough to see to my own safety.”
And you obviously are quite good at it, since you are now riding in a carriage with a stranger un-chaperoned. Do you have any idea what happens to nice ladies such as yourself in situations like this?” He leaned closer, hoping his presence was enough to frighten her into avoiding such trips in the future.
Her chin went up a notch as she met his gaze. With his next indrawn breath, her sweet scent that held a hint of orchids filled his senses. He’d grown fond of their heady fragrance during his time in India. Why couldn’t she have smelled of roses or something normal like other English misses?
Nothing untoward ever happens to me.” She said the words with the utmost confidence. Yet they held an underlying hint of something he couldn’t identify. Was it regret?
His gaze dropped to her lips. He could tell the moment awareness of the danger she was in struck her, for she gave a tiny gasp. The pulse just visible at the base of her throat sped. His gaze caught on the dent in her chin before he stared into her eyes once more, telling himself he needed to back away before doing something he’d regret.
But those hazel-green eyes with specks of gold left him no choice. There was a question in their depths. He recognized it as he had one too.
Damn,” he muttered then took her mouth with his. Any idea of intimidating her fell away the moment his lips met hers. A surge of desire took him under, and he slipped his tongue into her mouth, swirling in its depths.
His entire body quivered at the spicy flavor of her. She tasted as good as she smelled, with a hint of cloves and cinnamon. Then her tongue hesitantly moved against his as though she was unfamiliar with doing so, and he nearly groaned. He tilted his head to deepen the kiss.
Her gloved hand fluttered up to the side of his face, whether to push him away or draw him closer, he didn’t know.
The knock on the carriage door had him jerking back.
We’re blockin’ traffic,” his footman called out.
Nathaniel shook his head in an attempt to clear it. The woman appeared as startled as he. Indeed, she should be after that potent kiss. He quickly opened the door and exited to assist her in alighting right outside the bookstore she’d named, as promised.
Her hand trembled in his as she stepped down to the street. Rather than please him, as it had been his initial intent to frighten her, it angered him. Now that he’d been successful in scaring her, regret filled him. Somewhere deep inside, he’d wanted her to enjoy that kiss as much as he had.
Do not venture there again,” he said then cleared his suddenly dry throat. “It’s far too dangerous. Do I make myself clear?”
Perfectly,” she answered as she looked up at him.
He stared hard at her. Surely that couldn’t be delight in the depths of her eyes or a hint of a smile on those luscious lips. Not when her hand shook so. She pulled it from his grasp.
Good day, Mr. Hawke.” She turned and walked into the bookstore without a backward glance.

This short adventure is a prequel for the Knight Traveler series that begins with Timeless Vision, coming December 15th!

King Arthur has learned of a terrible threat - an evil cult is on the verge of destroying Camelot as the first step in a power play that could enslave humanity well into the future. In desperate need of help, Arthur assembles a trio of knights uniquely equipped to assist him in his quest to protect the innocent and conquer the encroaching darkness.

Excerpt from Heart of Time

King Arthur watched quietly as three of his trusted knights approached the gamekeeper’s hut. The door was flung wide, a fire blazing in the grate, yet his hand rested on Excalibur’s hilt. It was no longer safe to travel unarmed.
His private guard had taken up positions in the surrounding trees, ready to launch an offensive or a rescue at the designated signal from him. That he’d taken such measures would offend his friends, but he would not risk his life or any of theirs, should one of them prove turned by the enemy.
For nearly a year Arthur had heard the whispers, felt the warnings at the wispy edges of his dreams and in the heart of his worst nightmares. Creatures who craved darkness and dealt in evil, always a threat to his personal quest for peace, were gaining a foothold in the west. To what end he could not see and Merlin, his most-trusted advisor, remained coy as always about the future.
He felt it now, another tendril of that ill wind grazing his cheek, despite the clear bright autumn sky and the heat of the fire at his back.
Three pairs of boots crunched on the path, growing louder as the men approached. Arthur studied the wilderness crowding the path, but he found no sign of the animals typically near each man. He knew they were out there, the hound, the bear, and the hawk, as steadfast, watchful, and stealthy as his own guard.
When the knights saw him, all three faces lit with friendly and curious smiles. Arthur hoped what he had to say, the task he had to assign wouldn’t extinguish the light in his dearest friends.
“Is there good hunting this season, my king?” Sir Gawain asked, his long stride putting him a half step ahead of the others in the party.
“I fear there may well be,” Arthur replied under his breath.

Torn Trousers by Andrew St.Pierre White and Gwynn White

What could possibly go wrong in paradise?

Tired of mortgage and car payments, thirty-something Andrew and Gwynn sold nearly everything they owned but their Siamese cat and escaped their humdrum nine-to-five existence for life in paradise—a tiny island accessible only by boat or air in one of the remotest spots on Earth: the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Woefully inexperienced, they took control of a luxury game lodge where the rich and famous went to sip G&Ts with lions and elephants.

Trouble soon followed.

Their lives were threatened daily by snakes, elephants, baboons, and a hyena with a plastic fetish. Not to mention the endless—and often insurmountable—challenge of keeping their five-star guests fed in a world where the closest supermarket was an air flight away.

Amongst others, their guests included a famous Hollywood director, some French aristocrats, a Mafia lawyer, world-famous singers, and the England cricket captain.

Light-hearted and humorous, this adventure—peppered with some drama and suspense—will enthrall you with its unique look at life as game lodge managers in wild Africa.

Excerpt:

From what I could make out, this was one, maybe two elephants. They must have entered the camp from the runway end, passed our cottage unnoticed, before settling down to some concentrated chewing and tree pushing near number four, the cottage where the frosty Agatha and her partner were sleeping.
Then again, sleeping was being optimistic. Above the rumbling of elephant stomachs, whooshing trunks, and creaking palm trees, I heard the unmistakable sound of women squealing—and not in delight either. The guests were scared, and as manager, it was my job to protect them. Or so I told myself.
I scratched my beard, plotting my attack strategy. Elephants can’t see very well. Even so, I couldn’t risk lighting my torch. Not that the darkness helped me; they more than made up for poor eyesight with an acute sense of smell. Considering the garlic I’d eaten at dinner, I didn’t give myself good odds at remaining undetected should things go wrong. That meant I needed an escape route where they could neither see nor smell me. But where?
Then I remembered my new donkey boiler with its extra wide mouth.
Surely, the acrid-smelling ash would mask me and my breath? All I needed was to hide in its belly should things go wrong.
I heard the elephants shake fruit from the palms. It wouldn’t be long before they got frustrated and brought a tree down. Definitely time to move.
I set off into the dark, soundless night. And tripped over a log. Grunting, I dropped the bowl and the torch at the same moment a spider’s web wrapped itself around my face. Cursing inwardly while trying not to imagine the size, or current location, of the spider, I felt along the leaf litter for my stuff. My hand brushed something hard and cold.
Ah ha. The torch. Then the bowl.
I scrambled to pick them up, then stood—and bumped my head on an overhanging branch. The bowl fell out of my hands again, clattering to the ground.
This was the stupidest day ever. So much for my element of surprise.
I took in a deep breath and, weapons held securely, prepared for another attempt. A few more steps, and I reckoned to be about twenty paces from the elephants. They were still way too far off for me to see their dark bodies in the dark wood in the dark night.
I did, however, see a faint orange glow from the dying embers deep inside the donkey boiler. I crouched, my torso tense with excitement. Then, with three swift movements, I struck the bowl as hard as I could with the torch.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then a scream rent the night like an express train screeching to a halt after the emergency stop cord is pulled.
All hell broke loose.
I don’t know how many there were, but six, eight, twenty elephant charged through the bush towards me. The ground beneath my feet shook, branches cracked and fell, and two women screamed, and screamed, and screamed some more.
Not a second to waste.
I sprinted in the pitch dark towards the orange glow in the boiler. Diving in head first, I was vaguely aware of the hot coals charring my hands. Nothing for it but to suck it up. Weirdly, I felt no fear; the entire event was just surreal. Ash stirred by my feet wafted to my nose, and I stifled a cough. How long could I hold it?
Trumpeting and the rumble of feet passed around me.
Then silence.
My plan had worked.
Sneezing, I crawled out, gasping for air. I turned on the torch and stumbled towards cottage four. “It’s safe now.” My voice sounded like someone was strangling me. “You can sleep peacefully.”
The next morning over breakfast, I waited for Agatha and Yvonne to boast about my braveness. Surely, they would recount my heroic deed to the other guests?
But then I heard Agatha say, “And then, just before the elephants took off, Andrew tripped over the fire bucket!”
“What?” I spluttered.
“You know, that red bucket next to the cottage? I assume it’s for putting out fires. We heard you fall over it.” She turned to her audience. “Not once, not twice, but three times, he fell. That’s how frightened he was.”
I looked to Gwynn to redeem my flagging honour, but she merely patted me on the arm. “Tripped over a fire bucket, huh? And you told me you’d driven the elephants out of the camp.”
I buried my face in my blistered hands, ready to cry.

The Raven's Gift: Billionaires for the Holiday by Marie Treanor

$0.99

New Year’s Eve, 2045. Self-made billionaire Victor Melek is hosting the most glittering party in the city and preparing to announce his engagement to his unfaithful girlfriend.

Enter the Raven, a thief with a very peculiar talent, who threatens to steal his art treasures and his heart. In fact, she flies away with them...

Excerpt:

He blinked and shook his head. But she still stood there, wide-eyed, gazing straight at him.

And fuck, she was beautiful. Without the mask, she displayed broad cheekbones and deep-set eyes, the effect undoubtedly pleasing to the eye in an unusual, piquant sort of a way. She wore no makeup on her soft, almost transparent skin. Slender and curvy in all the right places, her breasts full and perfect with dark, enticing areolas and plump nipples begging to be kissed. He wasn’t sure what hammered at him most: her beauty, or her metamorphosis from a bird to a woman. A feather floated in the air in front of her.

“Did someone spike my drink?” he asked. “Hell, did I spike my own drink?”

“Oh dear. You weren’t meant to see that.”

“The view’s just fine,” he said. He knew his eyes were devouring her body but couldn’t seem to make them stop. Which might have been why his brain had given up working.

Two impossible events: the vanishing of five of the new miniatures, the shape-shifting of his sexy pirate. The connection arrived with a clunk.

“I want them back,” he said in his hardest voice. “All of them. Now.”

Her chin tilted upward. “Or what? You’ll call the cops and tell them—on New Year’s night—that your miniatures were stolen from a locked penthouse room by a pirate who turned into a raven? Insurance isn’t going to like that story either.”

His jaw tightened, and he advanced on her purposefully. “I don’t need the cops to catch you, do I?”

Her soft, naked arms were cold under his grasping fingers. He pushed them behind her back, in classic hand-cuffing pose, but she made no effort to escape. In fact, after a moment when she held herself rigid and he glared down into her face, trying to stop his anger evaporating into inevitably rising lust, she relaxed, pushing into his hold and snuggling against him, as if for warmth.

“Oh no, you can’t play that card twice,” he said with bitter cynicism.

“Why not?” she said huskily. “You like it.”

“I like my miniatures more,” he said firmly. “And I refuse to be robbed under my admittedly inebriated nose.”

“Why?” she asked, lifting her head from his shoulder to gaze up into his face as if she really wanted an answer.

He shrugged, then wished he hadn’t, since the motion rubbed his chest against her breasts, sharpening the clamouring of his blood. “I like my miniatures.”

“Yes, but what good do they do you? You stuffed them under the bed. You take them out to gloat whenever you remember. Sure, you like them. But they don’t make you any happier than your other possessions.”

“I see.” He regarded her with fascination. “So you’re stealing from me to make me happy? I had the oddest idea it was to make you happy.”

“Well, it will do me good,” she admitted, “though that’s not the same as happy.”

“How will it do you good?” he enquired. There was a tiny mole on her shoulder. He couldn’t resist brushing his fingers over it. Her shiver felt like an involuntary response to his caress, but he refused to fall for that. She was playing him.

“It’ll feed me and my brothers and sisters for a couple of weeks.”

“Oh, for God’s sake, I’m not falling for that! How gullible do you think I am?” Irritated, he tried to push her away, meaning to hold her only by one arm to control his raging lust if nothing else. But she clung to him, her arms sliding around his neck as she pressed herself to him. Her breasts rubbed against his shirt, her nipples hard and sexy; her hips fitted over his, cradling his straining erection.

“You don’t like the truth, do you?” she whispered.

“You wouldn’t know the truth if it slapped you in the face.”

“I’d know it if it kissed me,” she said huskily. “Maybe you would too.”

He stared at her, hearing only the rapid beats of his heart. Her liquid eyes were warm and soft and just a little desperate. And yet the odd notion came to him that there was more truth in her thieving little soul than in the rest of his invited guests put together. Including Briony.

It was a ploy, of course, like dancing with him to steal the bedroom key. And yet, on impulse, he dipped his head and captured her lips.
Her fingers curled in his hair, and she opened to him like a flower. She tasted like he imagined nectar, sweet and heady, and the feel of her responsive lips under his drove every other thought from his mind. When he found her tongue, it tangled with his, drawing it into her mouth.

He flattened his palms against her naked back, caressing her from shoulder to buttocks, pulling her harder against him, and she emitted a tiny moan as she pushed back, nudging him, surely towards the bed.

“I’ll still give you over to the cops,” he promised with a hint of desperation. “This doesn’t mean I’ll let you go.”

“You won’t need to,” she said, and seemed to dip in front of his eyes. Without warning, he held only air. A bird flew under his arms, its wings flapping loudly towards the bed.

Victor lunged after it, but it already had the gold pendant fitting in its beak. Struggling, it lifted off the bed, flashing past his head and across the room to the open window. Why in hell had he not shut the window?

Because he was drunk, and this whole situation was impossible. Bolting after the raven onto the balcony, he imagined he could still feel the rush of displaced air caused by her wings. But he couldn’t see her anywhere.

On Minty’s way home, a young, bearded stranger approaches her. Though he turns out to be her mother’s prospective boarder, Daniel Price stays a mystery in other ways. For instance, what was he really doing next door inside the house of the nosy Miss Agnes Shackleton?

Minty barely has time to tell her mother about her jinxed morning when Miss Shackleton shows up and repeats malicious gossip about the Wilcox family. She even threatens to run the Wilcoxes out of the Quality Hill neighborhood.

Before Mama can get rid of Miss Shackleton, who should show up but Clayton Cole, demanding the steep sum of one hundred dollars to forget what he claims he saw Minty murder Soldier Hanks.

So there’s nothing for Minty to do but set aside her search for employment and go looking for Soldier Hanks. At Mama’s insistence, Daniel Price escorts her. Talk about nosy! Why else does Price keep showing up wherever Minty goes? Why else would he sneak into her room and look at her diary? (Thank goodness, she writes her installments in shorthand.)

In spite of her efforts to clear her name, eventually bad luck spreads like a nasty cold from Minty to her entire family and to Mr. Daniel Price as well. Minty feels that she brought all these troubles to her family and friends, so she must set things right.

This won’t be easy in Kansas City where, a hundred years ago, living could get downright deadly.

Praise for January Jinx
Book 1 of the Calendar Mysteries
Mystery and romance in old Kansas City
By Juliet Kincaid

What fun it is to read a mystery set in a different locale, Kansas City in this case. The main character, Minty Wilcox, is the kind of young woman you root for: gutsy and daring for her time while still trying to maintain her manners. The love interest is fun, the plot engaging and the ending a surprise. Jump into another century with a rich variety of characters and have a good read.

The story moves with no dead spots at all. One little surprise after another triggers the wonder when the next in the series will arrive. Overall, an enjoyable few hours of reading. Cleverly done.

Sometimes a girl just can't catch a break and that's certainly true for Minty Wilcox. Everything just keeps getting worse, but Minty knows she's not a murderer and she's bound to prove it. January Jinx is a great mystery and a great kick-off for this series.

The delightful, creative, and charming January Jinx introduces a terrific character in Minty Wilcox, a good old-fashioned cozy mystery persona who will surely be able to carry the planned-for series. It’s Minty who drives the readable narrative, and author Juliet Kincaid keeps the pace steady and fast at the same time for quite a readable experience. The writing is appropriate for the historical setting without ever being gimmicky or archaic . . . The unique setting of 1899 Kansas City is full of flavor that never overwhelms the story and characters. With a terrific, original, but still comfortable series concept, there are certainly big things afoot for Juliet Kincaid and Minty Wilcox’s Calendar Mysteries.

Excerpt:

Minty plodded along Pennsylvania Avenue with nary a glance at the houses, mostly red brick with gold painted trim or deep blue or jade green though here and there stood a stately home with a mansard roof in the French style like the Wilcoxes’ own or an eccentric Queen Anne with a porch here, a bay there.

Minty lifted her head and looked at the busts of Romeo and Juliet on either side of the front porch of the house across the street. Earlier they’d seemed to smile at her, urging her on her way to inquire at Corley and Son about the position for a stenographer/typewriter posted in the newspaper before Christmas. Now the romantic couple stared blindly into the wind-blown dust.

Minty passed these homes so eagerly, so confidently not long before, how long she didn’t know because she no longer had the watch her brother had loaned her.

She pressed her hand to her mouth. What will I tell Eddie? I should have made Cole return my things. But how? He had a gun. Maybe I should have reported the soldier’s fall to the police. But what if the sheriff reported me to the police? They’ll arrest me and–

“Miss Wilcox?”

A man in a reddish brown suit ran down the steps from Miss Agnes Shackleton’s porch as Miss Shackleton herself, as ever in black, vanished into her house. In ghostly gray, Miss Shackleton’s maid followed.

“Yes?”

The man stopped in front of Minty. He was bearded, but his complexion was young and so were his dark brown eyes. He carried a large leather Gladstone traveling bag and a black coat.

“Who are you?” Minty asked. “How do you know my name?” Oh, no, here you go again, Minty, talking to strangers on the street. Look where it led last time. “Good day.” Minty stepped forward.

The man jumped aside, dragged his hat off and bowed. “I’m Daniel Price, Miss Wilcox. Forgive me for being so forward. I wrote the address down wrong, you see.” He held out a slip of paper that bore “1070 Pennsylvania” in bold, square letters.

“I guess I see, if you meant to come to our house. Though why you would want to, I wouldn’t know.”

Instead of clarifying that issue, the young man waved vaguely to his right. “That lady up there?”

“Miss Shackleton?”

His eyes sparkled. “She doesn’t speak highly of the Wilcoxes.”

“She wouldn’t.” Minty glanced at Miss Shackleton’s house, a vast white pile, not nearly so elegant as the Wilcox home, 1074 Pennsylvania, a four-story red brick with olive green trim. A mansard roof topped it and a porch jutted from the front of the main level. “So why are you paying us a call, sir?”

Minty gave the stranger a closer look. His suit was tweed and new. The collar of his white shirt was crisp, his necktie modest, his beard and mustache neatly trimmed. “I warn you, sir. My mother doesn’t deal with itinerant salesmen.”

“I’ve come about the room.”

“The room?”

“Last week there was an advertisement in the newspaper.”

Mama had said not a word to Minty about taking in another boarder, but it wouldn’t do for her to let this stranger know that. “Oh yes, that room. You’d best come along then.”

With what she hoped was grace and elegance, she swept past him and up the steps to the porch of 1074. She stopped in front of the heavy oak door while the man opened it for her. At the other end of the vestibule, she stopped while he opened the inner door as well. “Do come in, Mr. Pierce. Let me call my mother.”

“It’s Price, Miss Wilcox. Daniel Price.”

“Oh yes, Mr. Price.” Minty turned to her right once, then right again. She stopped by the small oak table against the wall that separated the vestibule from the front hall. She lifted her gaze to the mirror. Minty gasped. Some time during the hectic morning, her small black hat with a deep red rose below the brim had slipped off the top of her head and now perched on her right ear. “Oh.” Minty yanked out her hatpin, removed her hat, and dropped it on the green damask table cover. She smoothed her brown hair.

“Minty! Minty!”

In the mirror, Minty glimpsed a girl in a blue dress on the oak staircase, still garlanded with Christmas greenery. A black cat just ahead of the girl jumped off the next to the bottom step, sprinted across the front hall and sprang onto the window seat while the girl teetered on the last step but three. Then Minty’s youngest sibling jumped, picked herself up, and danced from foot to foot, her blond curls and pink ribbons bouncing. “It’s him, Minty. Miss Shackleton’s beau.”

“Miss Shackleton has a beau?” the young man said. “Surely not.”

“Un huh, she does. It’s you!”

“You think I’m Miss Shackleton’s beau? Interesting.”

“Come here, Peach. You look a sight.” While the little girl gawked at the young man, Minty smoothed her blond curls.

“I’m no one’s beau at the moment, but I know who you are.”

“You do?”

“You’re Miss Priscilla Wilcox.” Mr. Price took Peach’s grubby hand and shook it. “I’m very happy to make your acquaintance.”

Peach pulled away. “I’m Peach. That’s what Papa calls me and everybody else, too, ‘cause I’m Papa’s peach of a girl.”

“I can see that.”

“Hold still, Peach.” Minty retied the pink ribbon on the right side of Peach’s head.

“How did you know my name’s really Priscilla?”

“Miss Shackleton next door gave me the particulars of everyone in this household.”

“Huh?” Peach said.

Minty tugged the blue skirt out of Peach’s drawers. “She told him all about us apparently, but you know, Mr. Price, you shouldn’t listen to that old . . . to Miss Shackleton. She bears us many grudges for things we never did. But you probably want to speak with my mother about the room, Mr. Price, instead of hanging about the front hall all day. . . . Peach? Where’s Mama?”

“I don’t–”

“Mama’s in the cellar helping Gerta with the wash,” said Eddie, Minty’s youngest brother, as he limped into the front hall. Small for his age, he wore a starched white shirt with a gray vest and matching trousers. He had narrow, foxy features and reddish brown hair. “Who’s this?” He stared through wire-rimmed spectacles. “My mother doesn’t deal with men who sell door-to-door, sir.”

“You must be Master Edward.”

“It’s Mr. Edward Wilcox. I’ll be fourteen next month.”

“Mr. Wilcox.” Price edged past Minty and Peach. He held out his hand.

“Eddie, this is Mr. Daniel Price. He’s come about a room Mama advertised in the newspaper.”

Eddie shook hands with Price, but stood his ground.

“I am impressed with your cautious nature, Mr. Wilcox. Let me show you my references, sir. Let’s see. Where are they?”

Price folded his black coat inside out to reveal a black and dark green plaid lining and an Emery, Bird, Thayer label. Bold as brass for someone who didn’t yet know if he’d be accepted into the house as a lodger, he laid the coat on the armchair with green plush upholstery by the table and his hat on top of the coat. He dropped the valise on the tapestry Brussels carpet in front of the chair.

“I think they’re in here,” Price said. Kneeling, he rummaged in his bag and pulled out a pair of socks, rolled together. He dropped the socks back in the valise and drew out a white shirt, then put it back. “Where can they be?” Price splayed his hand across his bearded chin. “I remember!” He jumped up and pushed his hand into his jacket pocket. “Not there.” Ever faster, he patted his inside pockets, his vest pockets, large and small, his outside jacket pockets above and below, inside pockets, back trouser pockets, front trouser pockets.

Minty tapped her right foot.

Finally, Price put his hands on his hips. “Peach, you little imp!”

“I’m not no imp.”

“Grammar, Peach.” Peach was the youngest member of the household, so everyone who lived at 1074 Pennsylvania except the cat corrected her. “You need to say, I’m not an imp.”

“Well, I’m not no imp neither.”

“Peach!”

Price reached behind Peach’s left ear and tousled her curls. “Funny. I don’t feel any horns.”

“I don’t have horns!”

“Here it is. You had it all the time.” Price held out a silver coin he’d apparently plucked from behind Peach’s ear.

“I’m showing Mama.” Peach grabbed the coin and skipped out of the room. The cat jumped down from the window seat and padded after.

“Cheap parlor trick,” said Eddie. “Will you show me how to do it?”

FREE

John Grisham says THE TUMOR is the most important book he has ever written. In this short book, he provides readers with a fictional account of how a real, new medical technology could revolutionize the future of medicine by curing with sound.

THE TUMOR follows the present day experience of the fictional patient Paul, an otherwise healthy 35-year-old father who is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Grisham takes readers through a detailed account of Paul’s treatment and his family’s experience that doesn’t end as we would hope. Grisham then explores an alternate future, where Paul is diagnosed with the same brain tumor at the same age, but in the year 2025, when a treatment called focused ultrasound is able to extend his life expectancy.

Focused ultrasound has the potential to treat not just brain tumors, but many other disorders, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, hypertension, and prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer.

For more information, you can visit The Focused Ultrasound Foundation’s website. Here you will find a video of Grisham on the TEDx stage with the Foundation’s chairman and a Parkinson’s patient who brings the audience to its feet sharing her incredible story of a focused ultrasound “miracle.”

Readers will get a taste of the narrative they expect from Grisham, but this short book will also educate and inspire people to be hopeful about the future of medical innovation.

Lies Come True

Excerpt:

The whistling woke her up. It was a quick, unfamiliar tune that sounded joyful.
Pain shot through her leg, and forced her to roll over on her side. The path felt cold beneath her arm and leg.
“Help.” She whimpered out into the park.
Blood poured from where the bullet had ripped through the side of her calve. She cupped her hand over her wound and felt the warm blood coat her fingers. When she applied pressure, her hand jumped off of the wound, and she yelped in pain.
She wiped her hand on her shorts and strained her neck to look back down the path, toward the whistling.
She took a deep breath and yelled. “Help, I’m over here.”
Trees surrounded her, and as the sunset cast their shadows across the path, she could make out a dark figure. She scrambled to stand, and her leg burned as she eased pressure onto it. When she turned back, the whistling stopped, and the figure ran toward her.
Everything in her told her to run. Her foot hit the ground for the first time, held all her weight for a moment, and in that moment, the pain was worse than anything she had ever felt. She saw the dark figure from the corner of her eye, still shrouded by the shadows as it approached, and something swayed behind it.
She turned back up the trail, and pushed herself to go forward. The next few strides hurt less than the first. She picked up her pace, and squinted into the last of the sunlight, as her heart pounded in her chest. She took deep breaths as she pushed herself harder, confident that she was gaining ground, and when she reached a clearing by the lake, she looked back.
It was a man, or what looked like one, but his face was white. And red.
He lunged past the place she laid bleeding only seconds before with a rifle over his shoulder.
She turned before anything else registered, back toward the street she parked on just behind the bushes at the end of the path. She heard the footsteps behind her slap against the path, and when she looked back she saw the figure clearly.
He wore a mask and wild strands of dirty hair flew behind it in the wind. The eye holes were dark, but the face looked wrinkled, pale, and bloody.
She forced herself forward, closer to the road behind the bush. She watched a car drive by, and if she wasn't mistaken, it slowed before disappearing behind the tree line.
Someone pulled into the parking lot. Someone’s coming to help me.
Her leg felt numb underneath her weight, and she focused on reaching the car.
A repetitive animalistic grunt was added to the sound of the feet pounding the pavement behind her and the sound of a car door slammed in the parking lot. The rhythm her legs kept fell out of sync, and each stride was more painful than the last.
She looked over her shoulder as she started to limp, and in that time, she saw enough to make her scream.

In Case of Emergency Workbook by Vicki Hinze

$4.99

Buy Here

You’re living your life. Suddenly, you’re in a position where you can’t speak or act for yourself. Do authorities know your emergency contact? How to reach them? Do your loved ones know what to do? Where to find things needed to assist you? I found myself in this position, and quickly realized that my family didn’t have quick and easy access to information I considered ordinary and everyday. It was--to me, because I worked with it. It wasn’t to them. So to spare us all anxiety, I created this workbook. And then I thought that if my family didn’t know what they needed to know, it was likely other families didn’t either, and, let’s face it, we might not want to know these things but when we need to know, we need to know--now. The simple truth is we don’t know what we don’t know, and none of us need more anxiety when we’re already in stressful and vulnerable situations. I created this fill-in-the-blanks workbook to help avoid that stress. It’s comforting to my family and to me, and I hope it will be to you and your family, too.
