She’s an investigative media superstar. He’s a formidable county sheriff. She’s determined to expose the insurrectionist leaders. He’s determined to stop her.

If ever there was an iconic Western county sheriff, it was Calian Begay. Ruggedly handsome, arrogance was his middle name. But then, having been elected by seventy-plus percent of the voters was no small feat. Particularly for the grandson of a famous Ute Indian chief.

Determined to take down the insurrectionist leaders threatening his county, Cal wasn’t interested in the foot soldiers. He was after the clandestine political and financial kingpins underwriting the dangerous violence. The only thing standing in his way was the media bombshell intent on riding the simmering inferno to national fame.

From her inauspicious role as a beat reporter, Scarlet Comstock clawed her way to the top of the heap, becoming a local, then regional, and soon, if she had anything to say about it, national media phenom.

She knew all her blockbuster exposé needed was for her to capture the leader of the American Patriotic Front addressing the “White is Might” conspiracy crazies. She frankly didn’t care if that compromised the sheriff’s campaign to torpedo the insurrection.

Remembering Cal’s fierce warning if she refused to pull back, Scarlett admitted the formidable sheriff had done what no man had. Made her think twice before she blew him off. Which she concluded only confirmed he was to be ignored.

Face it, which was more compelling? Winning a coveted national award or obeying the arrogant sheriff who, after warning her for the third time, had the temerity to threaten her personally if she “didn’t behave.”

If you dig brazen media stars, tough-as-nails lawmen, and scorching passion, hop aboard Taylor Lee’s sizzling new thrill ride. Discover how challenging exposés can be when sex and violence are in the mix. Grab Rampage: Book 1; Mayhem on the Mountain and prepare to be wowed!

Prologue

Not believing her luck, Scarlett inched through the moonless night, closer to the group of
men surrounding the firepit in the clearing. Hovering next to a big oak tree, she was careful to
stay behind the mammoth trunk. Ensuring that her phone was recording, she congratulated
herself for her daring. This was the break she’d been praying for. To get the national attention
she craved, all her blockbuster exposé needed was for her to capture the leader of the American
Patriotic Front addressing the “White Is Might” conspiracy crazies. Seeing the drunken ne’er-do-
wells waiting for the big guy to appear, she congratulated herself for her courage.

It frustrated the hell out of her that the local law enforcement leaders had tried to shutter her
provocative series. Damn, you’d think the fact she was on her way to garnering a National
Headliner award for news and documentary programming or, heck, maybe even a Pulitzer, the
least her home team could do was support her daring reporting. But the DPD chief and
particularly the towering Native American county sheriff had made it clear that in their superior
opinions, riling up the crazies was short-sighted at best.

The fact that Sheriff Calian Begay had convinced her spineless, pantywaist producers not to
pursue the degenerates was the reason she was crawling through the underbrush in the dark of
night all by her lonesome. So be it. If she was the only one on her team willing to go after the
White Is Might freakos and the only one with balls of steel, why shouldn’t she get the credit for
the daring reporting that was sure to set off a firestorm in the mountainous county?

Remembering Cal’s fierce warning what would happen to her if she disobeyed him, Scarlett
admitted that the formidable sheriff had done what no man had. Made her think twice before she
blew him off. But then, what could she expect from the egotistical lawman who’d made it clear
that, in his view, she was a frivolous annoyance if not an actual troublemaker? Which only
confirmed that he was to be ignored. Face it, which was more compelling: winning a coveted
national award or obeying the arrogant sheriff who, after warning her for the third time, had the
temerity to threaten her physically if she “didn’t behave”?

Later, the only way she could explain her lack of attention to her dangerous surroundings
was that the imperious sheriff had jinxed her. And then everything went black.
