Book Description:
Valkyrie Victoria Storm has werewolf hunters hell bent on revenge trying to kill her. She can barely keep her own downtrodden pack alive, let alone respond to the pleas of a murdered mother. Can she set aside her differences and work with her sworn enemy to save a little boy from a Christmas nightmare?
Review:
Critics of the paranormal genre and acquisition editors especially will often argue that stories about werewolves and vampires are old hat and that there is nothing new to be added to the literature out there. With derision in her tone, Melissa Snark will be the first to say, “Oh yeah? Let me prove you wrong.”
The Child Thief is a short story featuring Victoria Storm, a werewolf priestess of Freya who has been left in charge of her pack after a war with hunters has killed off most of the men in the pack. Victoria is a warrior-priestess, a Valkyrie, and is trying to be all things to the pack – spiritual guide, leader, protector and provider, so when someone outside the pack asks for help, Victoria isn’t sure she has anything more to give.
But Freya requires that she help, especially since the victims of this particular crime are children.
The nice thing about Melissa’s work is that even if her main character has a little supernatural (or maybe a lot of supernatural) help, she is at heart a believably tough woman doing her best to protect the people she loves. She’s a nurturer, teacher and fierce warrior and not too bad with her investigative skills.
Victoria is clearly a badass, but still manages to be feminine and have some weaknesses. Perhaps more importantly for new readers, this is not a typical werewolf story. Borrowing somewhat from the Werewolf:The Apocalypse game system, as Melissa is an avid gamer, the werewolves are less monster and more just people who live a little differently and are trying desperately to survive. With her weaving of Nordic mythology into the wolves value system and beliefs, Melissa nicely creates a world all her own.
The Child Thief is a free way to check out Melissa’s writing style and start getting to know Victoria. Try it and you’ll be as hooked on Loki’s Wolves as I am.
