Welcome to a new Old West

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas - 1850
Hannah knows one thing the moment she enters Fort Leavenworth—she's arrived in Hell. But inside is the means to a new life, a position as a scout on a wagon train bound for the Western Territories. All she has to do is convince the wagon master, Paden Callahan, she's the right person for the job.
After his wife was murdered by the Comanche, Paden let his work as a Texas Ranger consume him. Now he wants nothing more than to disappear into the West. Unfortunately, the one man he can't refuse has asked him to guide a wagon train full of tenderfoots across thousands of miles of Indian land. But Paden's greatest challenge turns out to be Hannah, a woman his heart won't allow him to ignore even though she was raised by an enemy he hates.

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas—Spring 1850

Lord help her, for she had entered Hell. That Hannah had sought guidance from the God of her past made her loneliness increase tenfold. She should’ve prayed to Grandfather Spider.

Well, what’a we got here?” someone yelled from behind her. The voice was rough with malicious undertones.

Don’t reckon I know,” replied another man. “Though she be a purty lil’ yellow-haired thing.”

Maybe, but we’d hafta get them injun’ clothes off her to tell fer sure.”

Hannah stiffened in her saddle but kept her buckskin-clad knees tight against White Cloud’s sides, urging him forward. She fought the need to tug down the frayed cuffs of her wool coat or touch the beads and feathers in her belt for comfort.

Don’t react, she told herself. Don’t make eye contact. Don’t turn back.

A mountain man, the size of a bear, spat a foul-smelling stream of brown chewing tobacco in front of White Cloud’s path. He sneered at Hannah with lips stretched over rotting teeth.

Behind him on a saloon porch, a trio of dusty cowhands rose from their card game, waved their whiskey bottles at her and hollered, “Ooh-wee, lovey! Come on down from yer horse. Let us show you a good time.”

Strident feminine laughter filled the air. Hannah’s gaze darted heavenward to discover a row of women dressed in corsets and short calico skirts. They leaned over the balcony railing, watching her with black-rimmed eyes full of disdain.

If she ignored them, maybe they’d leave her alone. Or maybe coming to Fort Leavenworth hadn’t been such a good idea. She had no choice. She couldn’t turn back.

From “Loose Ends – A Mary O’Reilly Paranormal Mystery”

 Chapter One:

 (Present day)
Moonlight stole through the living room windows of the small two-story home in the quiet town of Freeport, Illinois.  Its light cast shadows around the tastefully decorated room, turning ordinary objects into spectral stalkers.
The wind ruffled the sheer curtains that swept over the polished wood floor. In the hall, an antique grandfather clock struck the hour of midnight. Clear tones echoed the twelve chimes throughout the quiet house.
Silence shrouded the home for a moment.  Then a muffled noise came from behind the door that led from the basement stairs. Thump. Thump. Thump. It moved closer. The polished ceramic doorknob rattled.  Thump. Thump. Thump.  The door shook from the force of the blows. Thump. Thump. Thump. Once again the lock and hinges held the door in place. Thump. Thump. Thump. Finally, the wood around the brass lock splintered and the door crashed open.
He slowly shuffled from the doorway toward the staircase that led upstairs. Upstairs to the beautifully appointed bedroom.  The bedroom where one woman slept.  Alone and unprotected.
The wind moved through the curtains on the landing, midway up the stairs.  The wind caught his scent and carried it forward - the sickly sweet scent of a decomposing body.  He paused for a moment on the landing and then continued slowly up the stairs.
All of his movements were marked by a clear trail of blood.  Streaks of blood mottled the floor, the Oriental rug and now, the top of the stairs.
The bedroom door at the end of the hall was slightly ajar. Thick white carpeting muffled his footsteps.  He slowly pushed the door open and entered the room.
Moonlight spilled over the bed.  Mary’s long, light brown hair was spread across the pillowcase, a blanket covering half of her face.  She was snoring lightly and her arm was stretched over her head.
He moved closer to the bed.
She wanted to hold her breath.  The smell was almost too much to take. Instead, she concentrated on keeping her breath steady and rhythmic as if she were really asleep.
He stopped next to the bed and leaned forward.  Hanging over her in the dark.
She heard the drops of blood hit the ivory 400-count down comforter. Plunk. Plunk. Plunk.
“Damn!”
She turned in her bed and looked up at him.  He was dressed in gray, a Union soldier.  His uniform was riddled with bullet holes and thick, red blood slowly seeped from each opening.  But the blood dripping on her bed was not coming from those oozing apertures. No, the blood dripped from the stump where his head used to be.
Plunk. Plunk. Plunk.
She watched as the blood pooled on the comforter.
“Crap, this is going to stain!”
She closed her eyes for a moment and then pushed herself up in her bed.
“Look, I’ve just had a really bad day and I can’t deal with you tonight. Okay?”
He paused… and straightened. After contemplating her response for a moment, he shrugged his shoulders, turned and slowly shuffled out of the room.
“And try to keep your blood off the new tiles in the kitchen,” she called after him.
She put her elbows on her knees, laid her head in her hands and sighed.  Was she ever going to get a good night’s sleep?
Well, she might as well go and see what kind of mess he left downstairs.
She slipped out of her bed, examining the comforter for damage.  Fortunately, when he had departed so had his blood.
“Bonus,” she muttered.
Pulling on a short, silk robe, she tied it as she headed down the stairs.  She watched him retreat through the broken door, then closed it and moved a chair in front of it in until she could replace the lock – this time, she decided, with a deadbolt.
“Deadbolt – good one,” she chuckled.
Glancing around the room, she could see that other than a rumpled rug, he did surprisingly little damage.
“Not bad for a headless dead guy.”

Review:

I love this series. Each book in the Vicarage Bench Series is such a sweet romance. Together Always was a great read. I loved the storyline of a woman who was hated by her husband coming back from near death, only to be a sweet, kind, and loving woman. This is one story you'll find impossible to put down.

This one had a bit of a slow start, but I'm SOOO glad I stuck with it! This is one of the best chick lit novels I've ever read. Thoughts: A unique spin on the vampire genre.

Book Synopsis:

Review:

Time for something new? My Vampire Wedding is a unique spin on the vampire genre. Having read vampire fiction for over 15 years, I have to say that it was nice to read something so new. Regina Duke does an amazing job crafting a book that doesn't feel like the same ol' vampire fiction.

Excerpt:

So much for good mojo.
Barely past ten o’clock on a Monday morning and here I was the prime suspect in a murder investigation.
Nick pushed open the office door.  I stood there and let him hold it for a few seconds, then walked outside.  The sky was still overcast but it wasn’t cold—it’s seldom cold in Santa Flores.  We might have a lot of murders, but our weather was great.
Nick led the way around the corner of the building to the parking lot.
“Why did you leave the crime scene?” he asked, his cop face still firmly in place.
“What makes you so sure it was a murder?” I asked.  “I mean, how do you know it wasn’t an accident?  Maybe the driver was too scared to stop?  Or blinded by the morning sun?  Or distracted, or something?”
“Why did you leave the scene?” Nick repeated.
I guess I hadn’t done such a hot job of throwing him off.  I tried again.
“You’re trying to say that makes me look guilty?” I asked.
“No, you’re managing to look guilty all on your own.”
“I can’t believe you’d attach one ounce of credibility to what Janine Ferris told you,” I said.  “She was hysterical.”
Which was also the way I was starting to sound, I realized.
I drew in a breath to calm myself.
“Look, Nick, Jerry could have been in that alley for reasons other than coming to see me.  Maybe he was meeting someone else?  Or going to the deli?  Or having a smoke?” I said.  “And, yeah, whoever ran him down might have been driving a car similar to mine.  It’s a black Honda Civic.  There must be a million of them on the road.”
“A million, huh?  That’s your alibi?”
The great thing about relationships was the subtle nuances involved.  Not that I’m great at anything subtle, but I had this one figured out.
When you got to know someone you discovered all sorts of little tells that gave them away.  A crooked grin.  Tightly pressed lips.  A quirked eyebrow.  All the silent cues that spoke volumes.
Nick had his.  I’d learned a few of them and saw one now.  That little twitch in his left cheek that told me he was just messing with me.
I think Nick liked to yank me around, sometimes, in the hope that I’d offer to have sex with him to get myself out of trouble.
    Not a bad idea.
Yet not necessary, at the moment.
“If I’m your best suspect, Sherlock, you’re in trouble,” I said.
Nick leaned a little closer and his killer smile appeared.
“Maybe I like being in trouble,” he said.
Oh, boy.  I was the one headed for trouble here.  There was no real defense against the Nick Travis smile.  It sapped the strength, neutralized vital brain cells, and wiped out the willpower of any female on the receiving end.  I felt myself giving in.      Nick looked away, releasing me from his sexual tractor beam, and backed up a little.  He knew what he was doing.
I did too.  And I’d already been messed with enough today.
“Look, Nick, some of us have real jobs,” I told him.  “I need to get back inside.”
“Tell me about Jerry Donavan,” he said.
I should do just that.  I’d witnessed a murder—almost—and I knew the victim.  It was my duty as a citizen to cooperate with law enforcement.
But I wasn’t in the mood to cooperate with Nick Travis.

Deeply In You (The Wicked Dukes) by Sharon Page

Deeply In You (The Wicked Dukes) by Sharon Page
$9.39

Sensual Awakening
Anxious to save her brother from debtor's prison, Helena Winsome agrees to find proof that the Duke of Greybrooke is a traitor. Well aware of his wicked ways, she takes on the guise of a demure governess. But his smoldering sensuality overwhelms her--as does his vow to make her his lover, a scandalous promise that leaves her weak with desire. . .

Sexual Seduction
Darkly handsome and powerfully seductive, the Duke of Greybrooke is a man of deep passion. When the lovely Miss Helena Winsome turns down an offer to become his mistress, Grey takes on the challenge. He'll expose Helena to the erotic thrill of carnal pleasure and tease her senses until all she can do is beg for more. . .

Excerpt:

Watching the children to ensure they stayed at their work, Helena led the duke into the nursery room, and stopped in between the two rows of neat little beds.
Even this—just being alone with him in this room—could see her cast out of her job without a character. A few moments alone could ruin her forever. But she had to take the risk.
The moment she closed the door behind her, he clasped her hand and turned her, and before she had a chance to be prepared, he raised her bent fingers to his lips. “Beautiful hands.”
She tried to pull her hand free but she couldn’t. He gently brushed his mouth over her fingers. A jolt, like a strike of lightning, leapt through her body from her hand. “How can you know? I’m wearing gloves.”
He kissed each finger, making her shoulders quiver with the sheer thrilling sensation rushing through her. “I love slender hands that are small and nimble. These hands dry tears, wipe noses, show children how to form their letters and numbers. These hands forge futures, and that is more than mine have ever done. The only useful thing my fingers have done is tweak nipples and stroke cunnies until ladies scream.”
Your Grace.” Her tone was one of severe reprimand. But his words about her hands had been so sweet, she was stunned.
All right, my dear. I won’t say anything naughty. Disappointed?”
His index finger rested on her chin. He lifted it slightly, and she tipped her face up. Then she realized she’d obeyed him, and she jerked back. But now she couldn’t stop looking at his eyes. They were the most beautiful green—this close she could see that his irises were emerald but rimmed in gold, like priceless jewels in a precious setting.
His lower lip was lush and full, softening now into a seductive pout.
Why did you come here?” she said desperately.
I came to apologize. But I have to admit, there is something about you that goads me into behaving like a devil. I know I should keep away from you. My tastes are too dark for a sweet, innocent woman like you.”
He spoke as if she were the one in the wrong—for simply being decent. “I take it you mean the riding crops and spanking? I cannot imagine what such things have to do with love affairs. Your tastes are too—too inappropriate for any lady, I think. Really, Your Grace, should you not try to behave your—?”
She stopped. Her tongue had raced away on her. To save her family, she was supposed to flirt with him. To get into his house, she must encourage him.
You’ve done it again. Insulted me and yet intrigued me.” A slow smile came to his lips, and as it lazily unfurled for her, she felt her knees wobble. “Now you see my problem. You should be untouchable for a man such as me—too proper, too respectable, too decent. Yet I have to have you. At any price.”

Review:

PJ Sharon has realism down pat. It's actually one of the things I love most about her books. Sharon writes young adult and coming of age novels that teens can truly relate to. Pieces of Love features a girl who uses drugs and her own music as a form of escape, something many teenagers can relate to. However, when she meets a great guy, she may be able to let the pain go and replace it with love. This is a great book that you'll have a hard time putting down.

Well-written story with interesting characters. Love In Touch by Lucy May Lennox was unlike any book I'd read. The closest I think I've come to a story like this was the movie At First Sight starring Val Kilmer. It was an enjoyable read and a good heartwarming romance.

Thoughts: Charming, Engrossing Love Story

Book Synopsis:

Do you remember your first love?

When Dawn moved from Southern California to rainy, rural, Washington state in 1976, love took a backseat to worries about fitting in at her new school. Over time, her friendship with the boy next door grew until she realized she had found her first love without ever looking for it. Their sweet romance turned sour in 1979, and she said good-bye to that first love, apparently forever.

Twenty seven years later, a chance run-in led Dawn to question whether or not first love can really last and if she can find her own happily ever after. If you remember your first love, what it was like growing up in a small town where everyone knew your secrets, or the simpler times growing up in the seventies, you will find much to relate to in Both Sides Now.

Both Sides Now is a standalone true story that is a companion piece to the best-selling memoir Feels Like the First Time. They can be read separately or in any order.

This is her story.

Review:

I hadn't read Feels Like the First Time, but was happy to find out that Both Sides Now can be read as a stand alone novel. Something I immediately loved was the use of song titles as chapter titles. I think many of us have memories of our own attached to many of these songs. As for the storyline, I found it to be captivating. It's such a delightful read that it was hard to put down and I highly recommend it to those that love a good romance.

January Winston, mother of two, escapes her troubled past through education and petty white-collar crime. After she’s brutally attacked in her own home, she finds strength in her children and must decide if she’s better off with or without her partner-in-crime and his doomed schemes of revenge.

Excerpt:

The cop coughed. “They can’t see you.”

Before January could brace herself, the room erupted in green light: deep, dark, ocean-green, and she faced off against five men, all of whom stood in this light, all of whom squinted into the window. The cop with the cough moved behind her, his hack grotesquely productive.

One of the lineup men adjusted his posture. January's abdomen clenched. He had crazy hair, sharp, shaven cheekbones. She didn’t recognize him, but there was something about his small bird eyes. They darted toward her, not quite random; she flinched, focused on a crack in the concrete floor. Behind her, the cop cleared his throat, and she bristled at movement near her shoulder.

She managed to raise her head.

Behind the glass, the suspect’s Adam’s Apple was more of a shard caught in his throat. It seemed familiar, yet until a voice came over a loudspeaker instructing the men to rotate, she couldn't decide, not until they had all turned away from her, backs and palms forward. It wasn't the man's hands, exactly, it wasn't the calluses or the spider-web palm prints, it wasn't some overtly identifying detail. It was the space within his palms, the void between palm heel and middle fingertip that she knew was capable of covering her entire face. When the man flexed his fingers, she recalled the strength in the curve of his thumb.

Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic (Dowser Series Book 3) by Meghan Ciana Doidge

Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic (Dowser Series Book 3) by Meghan Ciana Doidge
$3.99

I hadn’t set foot in the human world for more than a few hours in over three and a half months. Sure, I was stronger and faster than I’d ever been before, and I had a shiny new sword, but I was seriously chocolate deprived. I don’t recommend quitting cold turkey. And the new sword was a problem — to my mind, anyway. It represented all the expectations of a powerful father and a new otherworldly life. A life that wasn’t the one I’d worked so hard to build. It also represented the responsibility I had to bring my foster sister Sienna to … what? Justice? I didn’t know if that was even possible. What I did know was that Sienna wouldn’t stop, and that I couldn’t just leave everything up to fate and destiny … or maybe I was. Maybe I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. If you believed in that sort of thing.

I just hoped that before the chaos and mayhem renewed, I’d manage to get my hands on some chocolate. It didn’t even have to be single-origin Madagascar. I was utterly prepared to lower my standards.

Edie and the CEO by Mary Hughes Review

Title: Edie and the CEO
Author: Mary Hughes
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Pages: 160
Price: $3.82
Thoughts: Excellent flow to the story.

Book Synopsis:

Edie wants to make her 60s protester grandparents proud. But championing the little guy gets her in trouble with sexy CEO Everett Kirk. Someone's trying to force Everett out of his job, and Edie's latest escapade hasn't helped. A snowstorm and an empty cabin makes them confront their attraction.

Edie Rowan is passionate about workers' rights, wanting her Sixties protester grandparents to be proud of her. But championing the little guy gets her in trouble with sexy CEO Everett Kirk. Kirk is Mr. Ultra-Executive with his expensive hand-tailored suits and his eyes the steel blue of a finely tempered sword - but for the intriguing contradictions of his neat ponytail and square workman's hands.

Edie's latest disaster, a teambuilding exercise gone facepalm wrong, leads to a knockdown drag-out with rival manager Bethany "The B" - or add the "Itch" - Blondelle. The incident is the last straw for Kirk. He sends Edie to management camp and to her shock, announces he will drive her there himself. She wonders why he would want eighteen hours of enforced intimacy with her, even as she's dazzled by his sparkling white smile and killer dimple.

Everett walks away from the confrontation with a headache. For years he has protected Edie from the fallout of her righteous crusading, but this may be the last time. A corporate backstabber is trying to eject Everett from his job. Even so, he's looking forward to spending time on the drive with Edie, attracted to her sunny red curls, fiery personality, and fine dark eyes.

Then a snowstorm forces them to seek shelter in an empty mountain cabin. Edie thinks she will take the lead in wilderness survival but Kirk proves more durable than his Italian loafers and silk sweater would suggest. The extended stay rubs them together in all sorts of ways, kindling emotional and physical flames. But when their corporate shells burn away, what secrets will be revealed?

Sensuality Level: Sensual

Review:

Sexy, fast-paced, and fun. Edie and the CEO by Mary Hughes is impossible to put down. Not only does Edie's character seem realistic, but the way Hughes writes the novel, it just flows so well. If you're looking for a contemporary romance to enjoy, I highly recommend this one.

Sam's Story: Book Three (Skylar Trilogy 3) by Amy D. Crusan-Kramer Review

Title: Sam's Story: Book Three
Series: Skylar Trilogy, Book 3
Author: Amy D. Crusan-Kramer
Genre: Women's Fiction
Pages: 801
Price: $3.99
Thoughts: A powerful series with a great ending.

Book Synopsis:

In this captivating saga, Samantha Skylar experiences undying passion and endures one horrific act of brutality that sweeps her into the arms of the second most powerful man in the country. Samantha’s journey takes her from the poverty and close-minded attitudes of a tiny, coal-mining town in West Virginia, to the estate of one of Atlanta’s oldest and wealthiest families. This epic trilogy follows Samantha from the age of 14 to 40.

Book Three opens with Sam struggling to adjust to a new life in a new city. She is grieving the loss of her friends, while tentatively exploring a new relationship with the Vice President of the United States. Not quite a year into this new life, Sam finds herself back in Atlanta, once again trying to heal. Complications arise as she works to repair relationships with the people she loves most.

After her successful reentry into her life in Atlanta, Sam discovers a love stronger than any romantic love she'd ever experienced: the love of a mother for her child. But after one more devastating loss, she ponders the wisdom of ever letting herself love or be loved again.

Review:

One of the most powerful series you'll ever read. Sam's Story is a realistic read that will have you smiling and crying until the very end. In a way I was sad to see the series end, but the author did such an amazing job with the ending, that I was happy the way it turned out. I won't lie to you, though. This is a very emotional series that is sometimes hard to read if you connect with characters. With that said, I still feel that it's an amazing series that touches the heart and highly recommend it.

The Wooing of Miss Masters by Susan Carroll

The Wooing of Miss Masters by Susan Carroll
$2.99

A Regency romance by the award winning author of Brighton Road:

Every eligible maiden in the entire shire declared that it was like something out of a fairy tale. The Duke of Raeburn - whose formidable scowl was as legendary as his fortune - was hosting a ball to choose a duchess.

But never was there a woman less suited to play the role of Cinderella than Miss Audra Leigh Masters. Financially independent, Audra was content with her books, her dogs and her horses. She had no interest in acquiring a husband, especially not a man as arrogant as the Scowling Duke.

But from their first tempestuous encounter, the Duke is intrigued by Audra and determines he will have no other for his bride. But how does a man go about wooing such a stubborn woman and convince her that theirs is a match destined to be happy ever after?

Excerpt:

As Audra waited in the reception line, she tried to ignore the fact that her dancing slippers had already begun to pinch her feet. Her heavy chestnut locks done up in a chignon seemed to have a dozen hairpins impaled in her scalp. To take her mind from these discomforts, she amused herself by trying to guess which of these women Raeburn might be likely to choose for his duchess.
As the line inched forward, Audra soon caught a glimpse of Raeburn himself at the head of the stairs. He towered above most of his guests, the powerful frame of his square shoulders encased in a black evening coat. The glow of candlelight that picked out the flecks of silver in his glossy dark hair did little to soften the harsh cast of his countenance. Audra sensed he was trying to appear affable as he greeted so many chattering females, but it was difficult. His scowl seemed to come so much more naturally.
Still, he looked magnificent, as blazingly fierce as any conqueror of old, very much the duke and the lord of his castle. It occurred to Audra that she had felt much more on an equal footing when she had just blundered into him out by the moat. He seemed much more formidable looming at the top of the stairs, and her heart gave a flutter of trepidation.
When his attention shifted in her direction, she dropped a stiff curtsy.
His eyes skated over her, and he started as though in sudden recognition. He then subjected her to a more thorough and, Audra thought, more critical inspection. His gaze locked with hers at last, and her chin came up. She felt like a duelist about to raise her pistol, but she managed to say civilly enough, "Good evening, Your Grace."
"Miss Masters. I almost did not know you. What have you done to your hair? I liked it better down."
"I did not fix it with any thought of pleasing you."
"Indeed?" Raeburn bent, making an elaborate show of examining the knees of his breeches. Audra was certain she would be sorry for asking, but she couldn't help herself.
"What, pray, are you doing?"
"Checking for smudge marks." His eyes danced wickedly. "I don't recall getting down on my knees, but I suppose I must have done so. After all, you did say something about being reluctant—"
"I said I would not come if you begged, and I'm beginning to wonder why I did." Audra glared at him. "I only accepted the invitation, Your Grace, because I believed you would behave like a gentleman."
"No! What did I ever do to give you such a foolish idea as that?"
The thunderstruck expression he feigned coaxed a reluctant smile from her.
"That's better," he approved. "Put up your sword, madam, and I shall do the same. What do you say? Shall we call a truce?"
Audra merely arched both brows.
