Scared to
death—can it really happen? Trixie may find out. But will she live
to tell the tale?
Book 3 in a new series by the author
of the popular Penelope Pembroke Cozy Mystery Series
Just when Trixie thinks her new start
in Dreamland AR may be moving on, her mother announces she's
returning, too, to open a bed and breakfast in the old family home.
Maybe she can deal with Lucy but she's not even going to try to deal
with City Council Woman Daphne Carter's toothy son Alan who seems to
think he knows better than Trixie what's good for the historic
building bequeathed to her by her grandfather. And she's not sure her
definition of moving on is what Mitch Langley has in mind. They've
been best friends since she arrived, but is she ready to be more?
Between the new police chief, the
paranormal team Candace King brings in to hunt for ghosts in Al
Capone's old bootlegging tunnels, Danny Jefferson's candid photos
which are definitely worth more than a thousand words, and forensic
anthropologist Sean Mercer's dogged curiosity, Trixie can't catch a
break.
And somebody somewhere has a
bone to pick with Trixie's relatives. Most of them are dead--but
Trixie's not, and that's enough for that somebody.
Excerpt:
The
pounding on her door at two o’clock in the morning jerked her from
a sound sleep and sweet dreams of Mitch Langley. A white-faced
Candace hurtled inside as soon as Trixie opened the door. She’d
forgotten to turn off the alarm, and its shrill sound sent Candace
running to the sofa with her hands over her ears.
Trixie’s
cell phone rang. She dashed into the bedroom to grab it. “No, it’s
all right. I accidentally opened the door without turning off the
alarm. Sorry. Right. Thanks.” She grabbed a robe, dropped the phone
in the pocket, and returned to the sitting room. “I wish you’d
forget where I live,” she said.
Candace
looked up at her. “I couldn’t go home.”
“Where’s
Lindsey?”
“She
and Pete took his mother to her cabin near Petit Jean State Park for
the weekend.”
Trixie
took another look at the woman. “Candace, are you all right? You
look awful, almost like you’ve seen a…” She clamped her mouth
shut. I won’t go there. I just won’t.
“No.
But I shouldn’t have…I wish I hadn’t…”
“Called
in the ghost hunters, huh?”
Candace
nodded.
“So
you want to tell me about it?”
“I
have to tell someone.”
“Where
are they?”
“Headed
back to Camden where they’re from. They said they’d send me a
full report and some film next week.”
“You’re
not going to tell me they found something…are you?”
“That’s
exactly what I’m going to tell you. I wouldn’t have believed it
if I hadn’t seen it myself.”
Trixie
curled up on the sofa. “I’m probably going to regret this, but
start from the beginning.”
Candace
wrapped her arms around a throw pillow and clutched it as if for
protection. “Barry Todd gave us permission to use the hotel
basement entrance, of course. I felt it as soon as we stepped
inside.”
“Felt
what?”
“A
heaviness, almost like someone had dropped a lead cloak over me. Sean
had told me how to turn on the lights in the main tunnel and also how
to work the ones in the room where everything happened. The guys went
ahead with their cameras and whatever else kind of equipment they
use, and I followed. I could hear them talking, and then all of a
sudden it got deathly quiet. Then I heard someone scream, and one of
them came rushing back to me and asked if I was okay. They thought
the scream came from me.”
“But
it didn’t.”
Candace
shook her head. Anyway, we went on, and I thought heard footsteps
behind me, but every time I’d turn around, no one was there.”
“Of
course not.”
“Finally
we got to the room Capone’s people used to make the hooch. There
was still…blood…on the floor and some on the walls…”
“Don’t
even go there,” Trixie said.
“I
only got a glimpse because the lights went out, and we couldn’t get
them back on. The guys had flashlights, of course. They decided to
set up their stuff right there, so they did, and then we waited.”
“For
what?”
“For
whatever.” Candace took a deep breath. “It got ice cold in a
matter of seconds, and then I saw them—shadows swirling around, and
one of the guys started talking to them.”
“Did
they answer?” Trixie almost felt like laughing.
“We
must’ve stayed down there over an hour, and when we came out, they
said they’d gotten some answers on tape. So we went up to the
lobby, which was empty at that point, and listened.”
“So
who did you hear?”
“At
least four people. And one of them was a little girl. She said her
name was Lucy, and that her father locked her down there because
she’d been naughty.”
Trixie
sat up straight. “My mother? She can’t be a ghost—she’s still
alive!”
“I
don’t know, but I heard it with my own ears.”
“Things
can be faked.”
Candace
closed her eyes. “Maybe so. Trixie, let me bunk on your sofa the
rest of the night.”
“Okay.
I’ll get you a pillow and a blanket.” She started for the
bedroom. “And Candace—this was a bad idea. A very bad idea.”
Candace
nodded. “I know.”
