In 1569, Mary, Queen of
Scots was imprisoned in England on suspicion of witchcraft, murder, and treason.
It was a dark time. Queen Elizabeth was forced to deal with plot after plot of
dissension and conspiracy. Smoke filled the skies as I climbed the Tower’s
stairs to the cells that were under my ward. The Tower of London was known for
its infamous inhabitants, the last home of Queen Bess’s mum, Anne Boleyn, who had
been executed as a witch and an adulterer. This was one of the reasons the
Queen was suspicious of accusations of witchcraft. Before Elizabeth had been
made Queen, her own soul had been questioned. Witches, poor souls that were
often accused by a neighbor because of some disagreement, inhabited the Tower
from time to time. Occasionally, we would get the real thing. That’s when the
gates of hell opened, and our work really began.
